USL Creates New Competition Subcommittees
Published on March 2, 2016 under United Soccer League Championship (USL) News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The USL has announced the expansion of the league's competition committee with the creation of four Technical Subcommittees made up representatives of the league's clubs. The Subcommittees will discuss and offer recommendations on four key elements of on- and off-field matters that will help shape the USL and its clubs in future seasons.
Subcommittees in Player Development, Coaching Education, On-Field Competition and Off-Field Competition will be led by Technical Directors, General Managers and Head Coaches of USL teams, as the USL creates an open dialogue on raising league standards with its teams in all aspects of the league's operation.
"The USL has put a significant effort over the past few seasons into improving the product on the field and helping our clubs better their operations," said David Wagner, USL VP of Competition & Operations. "With the addition of the new our Subcommittees we are confident we will be able to increase the level of play, create an even better competition structure, provide new opportunities for those hoping to further their coaching education, and improve the youth development setup for our clubs."
The Player Development Subcommittee will explore sustainable academy initiatives and other mechanisms to enhance the professional player development and identification process, while the Coaching Education Subcommittee will discuss projects that will assist in the professional development of USL technical team staff members. Both subcommittees will be led by Gordon Bengtson, the USL's Director of Operations & Technical Development.
The On-Field Competition Subcommittee will focus on topics pertaining toward raising the standard of on-field play, as well as maintaining fair and balanced competition in the USL. This committee will be led by Brett Luy, the USL's Senior Director of Operations.
The Off-Field Competition Subcommittee will focus on topics pertaining toward raising the standard away from the field of play, as well as maintaining fair and balanced competition in the USL. This committee will be led by Wagner.
All recommendations from the USL's Technical Subcommittees will be submitted to the USL Board of Governors before final approval ahead of implementation.
