USL announces weekly honors
May 13, 2003 - A-League (A-League) News Release
TAMPA, FL â United Soccer Leagues announced today the Team and Players of the Week honors for the A-League, USL Pro Select League, Premier Development League and W-League for the fourth week of the season, honoring Montreal's Ze Roberto, Wilmington's Junior Zarate, Cape Cod's David Bulow and New York's Noelle Meeke as Players of the Week.
Montreal Impact midfielder Ze Roberto provided all the offense for the club in a 2-0 road win over nearby Canadian rival Toronto Saturday.
After repeated Impact incursions in the Toronto zone early in the game, Ze Roberto finally scored a first goal for Montreal this season in the 30th minute on a crisp header from a corner kick by Martin Nash, that beat goalkeeper Theo Zagar near the left post.
The two Impact midfielders paired up again early in the second half with an almost identical play, this time with Ze Roberto redirecting a cross from Nash on a header.
Ze Roberto is in his fourth season under head coach Bob Lilley, spending his first two with him in Hershey with the Wildcats, who reached the 2001 A-League final. Through his first three years, he had compiled 15 goals and nine assists in 75 games played. He was also a member of the USL team that toured Portugal in December of 2001.
Wilmington Hammerhead's midfielder Junior Zarate came off the bench to net a hat-trick and Player of the Week honors in the USL Pro Select League. Trailing 2-0 in the 62nd minute, the Hammerheads inserted what would prove to be quite an offensive punch into the game.
With a goal from Jeff Johnson cutting the score to 2-1 in the 68th minute, Zarate went to work. Two minutes later, Zarate scored his first of the game unassisted to level the score at 2-2. Bryan Jackson set him for what proved to be the game-winner in the 78th minute and Zarate finished the night with an insurance goal in the 89th minute unassisted.
Last season, Zarate scored eight goals and recorded two assists in 17 games as the team's second leading scorer behind Anthony Maher, who moved onto the A-League's Milwaukee Wave United. In his first season with Wilmington in 2001, he tallied four goals and five assists in 15 games.
The defending champion Cape Cod Crusaders found someone with some firepower this season with forward David Bulow opening the 2003 campaign with four goals, an assist and the PDL Player of the Week honor.
Bulow gave the Crusaders an early lead against the visiting Jersey Falcons Saturday with an unassisted goal in the third minute of the match. He scored again in the 31st minute on an assist from Luke Vercollone. In the 37th minute, Bulow set up Steve Reuter for a 3-0 lead and tallied his third of the night two minutes later for a 4-0 halftime scoreline. He finished the night with a second half tally in the 85th minute.
Bulow is a needed addition to the defending champions, whose leading scorer last season was Nicola Chicco with eight goals and one assist for 17 points in 15 games.
New York Magic forward Noelle Meeke is off to the hottest start in USL this year, tallying six goals and two assists in the club's first two matches to earn the first W-League Player of the Week honor of the year.
In the W-League season opener on May 3, Meeke scored twice as the Magic handily defeated the visiting South Jersey Banshees 7-0. Saturday, she doubled her scoring output with four goals and two assists at home against the New Hampshire Phantoms in a 9-0 win.
The 2000 W-2 Scoring champion with 30 points and goal scoring champion with 14 goals finished third in the W-League scoring race last season with 32 points on 15 goals and two assists behind teammate Jessica Reifer, who was second with 41 points. Reifer was also selected for Team of the Week with four goals and two assists in the pair of wins. Meeke was second in scoring the year before in W-1, recording 12 goals and two assists for 26 points. Meeke was fourth in W-2 in 1999 with 23 points (7 goals, 9 assists) while her teammate Reifer led the league with 61 points (28 goals, 5 assists).
