USHL Entry Draft Set for Tuesday

Published on May 21, 2012 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

Chicago, IL - The United States Hockey League will conduct the 2012 USHL Entry Draft on Tuesday, May 22nd beginning at 4:00 PM (Central). Draft selections for each team will be posted on www.USHL.com. Additional coverage of the 2012 USHL Entry Draft can be found on the USHL official Twitter feed ( www.twitter.com/ushl) and official Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/ushlhockey).

The number of rounds for the 2012 USHL Entry Draft is based on how many rounds necessary to bring each USHL Member Club's player roster to 30. After submitting their Initial Protected List, teams will first draft to fill their roster number to 23 players. Once every team reaches that number, the Entry Draft extends to allow all teams to bring their roster to 30.

Fifteen USHL Member Clubs will participate in the 2012 USHL Entry Draft and select players in the 1992 birth year age group and younger. The National Team Development Program does not participate in the Entry Draft as they conduct a separate player selection process, held separately but in cooperation with the USHL.

Players selected in Tuesday's draft will be invited to the tryout camp of their respective teams and have the opportunity to earn a roster spot for the 2012-13 USHL season. The purpose of the USHL Entry Draft is for teams to select players that can have an immediate impact in the League. Last year, players such as Thomas Nykopp (2nd overall, Tri-City Storm), Eddie Wittchow (4th overall, Waterloo Black Hawks), Ryan Lomberg (5th overall, Muskegon Lumberjacks), Kevin Roy (8th overall, Lincoln Stars), Matt Caito (13th overall, Dubuque Fighting Saints), and Dakota Mermis (14th overall, Green Bay Gamblers) were all selected in the first round of the 2011 USHL Entry Draft and went on to play starring roles for their teams this season.

The selection order for the USHL Entry Draft is based on the reverse order of the total points accumulated in the final 2011-12 regular season standings with the non-playoff qualifying teams choosing first. The order will remain the same through each round of the draft. Teams are able to trade or exchange draft positions, so the draft order below may change throughout the day.
