US Open Arena Soccer Championship is Underway

December 3, 2009 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

The nation's largest pro/am arena soccer tournament is once again underway. The United States Open Arena Soccer Championship is currently staging qualifying tournaments across the country. The winners will earn the right to face teams from the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro).

Any US team, pro or amateur can enter the US Open. Last year the St. Louis Illusion beat the Detroit Waza 8-3 in the final to win the first ever tournament. Like the outdoor Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the US Arena Open is conducted as an in-season tournament, seperate from the league championships.

This year's first qualifying tournament was held in Denver on November 22. The Ft. Collins Fury and Highlands Ranch Heat of the PASL-Premier and the independent Colorado Cavaliers squared off and the Cavaliers came out on top, marking the first time a team outside the PASL system won a game. The Cavaliers will face the Denver Dynamite on December 19.

On December 11, the Louisville Lightning will host the PASL-Premier's West Virginia Quantum Force in a single-elimination game.

PASL-Premier teams have not fared well against PASL-Pro teams, but the Tacoma Stars upset not one, but two PASL-Pro teams on the way to the US Open Semifinals before falling 11-8 to the Stockton Cougars.

This Saturday, the San Diego Fusion, San Diego Crew, Los Angeles Bolts, and ASC Hammers will play a qualifying round in San Diego.
