Update from Renegades training camp - day 15
June 12, 2005 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Ottawa Renegades News Release
KEMPTVILLE â The Ottawa Renegades Football Club, off Friday after Thursday night's 27-16 pre-season victory over Montreal, returned to the practice field Saturday under the scorching sun at Kemptville College/University of Guelph.
The team welcomed back two offensive linemen to practice. Veterans Val St. Germain and Samir Chahine practiced in full Saturday morning â though the pads were off for the 45-minute session. St. Germain has missed most of camp with a groin injury while Chahine returned from nursing a hamstring strain. The Renegades also renewed greetings with linebacker/safety Kyries Hebert, who missed a few days as a result of a family emergency.
The Renegades ran team drills, ran live plays (without pads or hitting), as well as special teams kickoff and offensive line sequences. Ottawa quarterback Kerry Joseph quarterbacked the first team offence, while rookie Paul Peterson took snaps for the second team as Brad Banks nurses a minor shoulder injury that was sustained in the Montreal win. Peterson capped off! his series of driving the team with a pretty fade pass for a touchdown into the arms of Markus Howell, letting it float over the receiver's right shoulder for six points.
TRANSACTIONS: The Renegades officially announced the signing of defensive lineman Johnny Scott Saturday. It was the first practice of training camp for the Texas native, who played for present Renegades head coach Joe Paopao in B.C. when the bench boss held the same title there in the mid-90s. Scott adds size and veteran experience to an already well-stocked defensive line... The team also released Canadian fullback Lloyd Orris.
LIMITED ACTION: Bannks, cornerback Crance Clemons (knee), quarterback Tyler Paopao (shoulder), receiver Darryl Ray (hamstring), running back Herbert Goodman (meniscus), linebacker Cam Yeow (shoulder), linebacker Brian Oddi (knee), receiver David Azzi (hamstring), defensive lineman Michael Moncrief (knee strain) and centre George Hudson (foot) missed ! practice. Hudson, who got banged up in the pre-season game, went for x-rays Friday â which were negative and will be out shorter than originally expected.
NEWS AND NOTES: It was unofficially fight day on Saturday at training camp and the participants couldn't have been more puzzling. Defensive end Keaton Cromartie got tangled up with offensive lineman Ibrahim Khan. The two are nearly locker neighbours â only a few stalls away â and are two gentlemen... The skirmish was forgotten moments later, as most training camp skirmishes are... Meanwhile, old man Yo Murphy had quite a battle of his own. The veteran receiver â now coming up on a dozen years of professional football as a career â got into a fight with a red, padded, blocking device. After belting it twice â the ! latter with a two-fisted swing â the blocker snapped back from the ground almost immediately, standing upright. Not even the great Yo Murphy could knock out a lifeless opponent not swinging back... Veteran kicker Bjorn Nittmo came in for a tryout after practice Saturday. The 38-year-old has played in the NFL, CFL, World League and Arena Football ranks in the past... Practice concluded with a number of conditioning drills and the usual suspects â Joseph, Hebert, Cromartie, receiver Robert Quiroga, running back Josh Ranek, linebacker Gerald Vaughn, receiver Jason Armstead and, once again, linebacker Jason Kralt â were, for the most part, the first to cross the line at the end of each sequence of long cross-field runs... ! The Renegades must slice their roster to 50 players (excluding! 2005 dr aft picks) by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 13, as per league policy.
SOUNDING OFF:
Here are some of Joe Paopao's thoughts regarding the upcoming transactions the team must make...
"We will probably make our cuts (Sunday) morning. We wanted to see our status injury-wise."
On the arrival of Johnny Scott:
"He has experience and is a load inside. He is tough against the run and will make big plays in key moments. In the fourth quarter, when you really need a play, he's your guy. And his hands... His hands are so big, it makes a football look like a softball."
On the amount of conditioning the Renegades do, especially in camp:
"We've got to hustle. We need to be in shape to hustle in the fourth quarter (of games)."
Johnny Scott, on arrival in Ottawa and continuing to play pro football:
"I'm back â back with the people I started with and I'm still playing football. I still feel I have two-to-three great years left in me. I can still push the pocket and stop the run. I am happy as a pig in slop to be here."
On playing inside at tackle with #99, Jerome Haywood:
"I am excited about playing with Jerome. When you talk about a 5-9 or a 5-10 guy who just pushes the line like that, wow. With me coming in, there will be less of a double team on Jerome â and that's great because he already stood out. And then you have Ray Jacobs on the outside, and Cromartie â I like his game. I am excited about coming in and contributing."
On his football shape:
"I am not sure if anyone is in shape for Paopao's camp with all the gassers everyday. But I had my best year ever playing for him when I did his (high-intensity) training camp. I weighed in at 282 pounds, which is my lowest in about seven or eight years. I still eat, I just eat better. I don't eat ice cream everyday like I used to when I was younger."
On his off-season job:
"I worked for a company called Fluke Transport. Their motto is: "If it's on time, it must be a fluke."
