Although it didn't seem it would be possible a few months ago, the sounds of "play ball" and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," are just around the corner at three Texas locations.

Gearing up for the fourth season of the United League Baseball are the Amarillo Dillas, Coastal Bend Thunder, the Edinburg Roadrunners, the Laredo Broncos, the San Angelo Colts and the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings.

Coastal Bend, located at Robstown, is the only new club, replacing the Alexandria Aces, which joined another league.

The six teams begin their abbreviated spring practice on Thursday (June 4) and open the 2009 season on June 11.

The games are:

June 11, 12, 13 and 14 - Coastal Bend at Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen); Amarillo at San Angelo; and Laredo at Edinburg.

Each club will have a 22-man roster. Some will have to trim their squad down to that number by opening day.

There has been a lot of non-playing action since the 2008 season ended, with the Dillas winning the ULB title, including state district and federal court action.

It all culminated a few weeks ago when ULB co-founders Byron Pierce and John Bryant repurchased the league after the then-owners had filed for bankruptcy.

Pierce and Bryant founded the league in 2006, but later left it in a dispute with those then-owners. Pierce and Bryant are the same men who founded the Texas-Louisiana Baseball League in 1994.

They sold their interest in the T-LL League in 2000 and it became the Central Baseball League in 2001. That league disbanded in 2005, with some clubs going into the American Association.

"We are back, the United League is intact and we look forward to a very successful season," Pierce said.
