United Football League Championship Game Countdown To Kickoff

OMAHA, NE - Monday, November 22, 2010 - After 10 weeks of close games, hard hits and record-setting performances, the time has come to crown the United Football League champion for the 2010 season.

Saturday at 11am Central (noon Eastern, 9am Pacific), the Las Vegas Locomotives (5-3) and Florida Tuskers (5-3) will face off in a rematch of the UFL 2009 season finale. This year's championship game will be contested at venerable Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska - the final major sporting event in the 62-year history of the longtime home of the College World Series.

In the first-ever UFL Championship Game, played on November 27, 2009 in front of 14,801 fans at Sam Boyd Stadium, the Locos won on a 33-yard field goal by kicker Graham Gano just 1:43 into overtime after cornerback Isaiah Trufant picked off Tuskers quarterback Brooks Bollinger on the first possession of the extra period. Las Vegas running back DeDe Dorsey was named the game's Most Valuable Player after rushing for 66 yards on 11 carries, catching four passes for 32 yards and scoring two key fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Dorsey is back to lead the Locos offense, along with fellow running back Marcel Shipp. Las Vegas head coach Jim Fassel will choose between first-year quarterbacks Drew Willy or Chase Clement as to who is the team's starting signal-caller. Defensively, the Locos feature a unit that allowed just five touchdowns during the team's five-game winning streak.

Florida has the UFL touchdown leader (10) and a past Super Bowl hero in running back Dominic Rhodes. The Tuskers also boast a defense, led by ball-hawking cornerbacks Simeon Castille and Darius Vinnett, sack masters Patrick Chukwurah and Joe Clermond and tackling machine Odell Thurman, which has stayed stout despite leading the league in debilitating injuries.

The Locos and Tuskers already have an extensive history against each other despite the UFL being just two years old. The Championship Game will be the sixth meeting between Las Vegas and Florida. The Tuskers swept the two regular season meetings during the 2009 Premiere season (29-15 and 27-24), the Locos won the first UFL Championship Game, then the two teams split the regular-season meetings this fall (a 27-20 Tuskers win in Week 1, and a 20-17 Locos win in Week 3).

The Championship Game features the two top teams in the brief history of the UFL in terms of on-field success. The Locos won the 2009 league title and has an all-time record of 10-5. The Tuskers lost in the title game last year and has an all-time record of 11-4.

CHAMPIONSHIP HALFTIME, PRE-GAME ENTERTAINMENT PUMPS UP THE VOLUME

The Championship Game will feature some high-quality and high-energy entertainment, both during halftime and before the game.

Legendary funk artist George Clinton, the principal architect of P-Funk and the mastermind of the bands Parliament and Funkadelic, will entertain fans during halftime of the Championship Game. Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic have told fans to "bring two bootys" with them to the game - one to sit down on and one to dance with.

"We're going to rock the house," said the enigmatic Clinton. "We're going to tear the roof off. We're going to have a funky good time."

Pre-game entertainment will be provided by Freedom Williams, co-founder and front man of C+C Music Factory, Omaha's own world champion Stepper-ettes fresh from their Macy's Day Parade performance in Manhattan and the Omaha Nighthawks cheerleaders.

The ever-popular Omaha Nighthawks Cheerleaders will join Williams with a specially choreographed routine to warm up the crowd before Championship Game kickoff.

"I'm really looking forward to it and we're going to make people boogie and be ready for the game," said Williams. "I hear it could be cold there in Omaha, but we will have a cool show that will get people warmed up and on their feet.

"I'm a big sports fan, I used to be on a basketball team and I remember the Locos coach Jim Fassel when he coached with the New York Giants. So I'm really excited to be playing for the UFL Championship Game crowd. It sounds like a lot of fun."

Fans also are encouraged to get to their seats early to witness the 106 baton twirlers that make up the spectacular Omaha-based Stepper-ettes open the pregame excitement by performing a special four-minute routine to holiday theme music.

Sue Foehlinger's Stepper-ettes Parade and Dance Team was formed in 1973 and the group has grown to be the largest baton twirling and dance organization in the Midwest. Youth between the ages of 4 and college participate and have performed at more than 600 area events including parades, community celebrations, halftime shows and the Special Olympics, and have performed and competed internationally.

GIVING BACK FOR THANKSGIVING

UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue and Mickey Anderson of Performance Auto presented Mike Saklar of the Siena/Francis House homeless shelter with one of the turkeys being donated to the facility this Thanksgiving at the UFL Championship Game Kickoff Press Conference.

The Commissioner, players from the Tuskers and Locos and UFL staff will volunteer their time to help serve Thanksgiving dinner at the shelter on Thursday from 4pm to 6pm.

Founded in 1975, the Siena/Francis House is Nebraska's largest shelter and is located in three facilities at 17th & Nicholas Streets in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. The Siena/Francis House provides emergency overnight shelter to men, women, and women with children. The Siena/Francis House also provides food to the homeless through a Meal Provider Program, clothing, and case management outreach services through a day services program.

UFL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME MEDIA DAY SLATED FOR TUESDAY

Tuesday will be a sport fan's dream - take pictures of, pick the brains of and get autographs from members of the two top teams in the United Football League.

The UFL will hold its Championship Game Media Day Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm at Rosenblatt Stadium. Media Day is open to media and the region's football fans, with a chance to get autographs, meet the players, get to know the teams and generally take part in the festivities.

Those attending will have an opportunity to interview players and coaches, as well as take a team photo. All players and coaches from the Las Vegas Locomotives and Florida Tuskers will be on hand at Media Day.

Want an autograph from Locos running back DeDe Dorsey? Want to ask Tuskers head coach Jay Gruden how he puts a gameplan together? Want to get a team photo of what could be the eventual 2010 UFL champions? It all can be done Tuesday at Media Day. In addition, UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue will host a press conference to review the 2010 season and discuss the future of the league.

The complete order of events includes the Locos team photo at 1 p.m., Locos interviews and fan interaction from 1.15pm to 1.45pm, the Commissioner's press conference from 1.45pm to 2.15pm, the Tuskers' team photo at 2.15pm and the Tuskers' interviews and fan interaction from 2.30pm to 3pm.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED

The United Football League has announced the game officials for the UFL Championship.

Earning assignments in the second UFL Championship Game are referee Perry Havener, umpire Johnnie Forte, head linesman Tom Keeling, line judge Sarah Thomas, field judge Robert Powell, side judge Peter Newton, back judge Ivan Daniels and alternates Steve Rieker and Larry Orrico.

Forte, Keeling, Powell, Newton, Daniels, Rieker and Orrico are in their second year in the UFL, while Havener and Thomas are in their first.

Thomas will become the first female to ever officiate in a professional football championship game.

"It is just an honor to be asked and placed with the other officials I get to officiate with," said Thomas.

"It is a chance that every official strives to work their best for and hopefully with recognition from peers and supervisors we are granted to work a game such as the championship game.
