UFL Virginia Update
September 1, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1) News Release
JACKSONVILLE, FL - Wednesday, September 1 - The United Football League concluded a series of positive investor and sponsor meetings in the Hampton Roads area with regard to the sixth UFL franchise that will play in Virginia in 2011.
Having seen an overwhelming amount of interest from local ownership groups to purchase the Virginia team, the UFL announced on August 20 that it had taken control of the franchise to determine the best local ownership groups to partner with the league.
United Football League Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE, team President ED REYNOLDS and other league officials held meetings and met with media in Virginia this week. The group continued to move closer to finalizing plans for the venues at which the Virginia team will play when the third UFL season kicks off in the fall of 2011.
"I came to address the leadership of the team and the direction we are following since the ownership transition and am very pleased with the progress," said Commissioner Huyghue following the meetings.
"We are moving forward one hundred percent with our expansion plans. It is clear that the direction we are following is very straight. We spent time looking at venues and feel good about our current status in the market."
The meetings also focused on ticket sales and finalizing details of a competition that gives fans an opportunity to 'Name the Team' - a contest that has proved popular in other UFL markets - which will be established in the coming weeks.
Team President Ed Reynolds, a Virginia native who has worked within the UFL since its inception, added: "I have no doubt that we are on course to build the model franchise here in my home State and be competitive next season. Our General Manager Doug Williams has spent time evaluating players and other franchises during training camp and is excited to build something great here in Hampton Roads."
Reynolds is in the process of establishing a team management structure and has brought UFL Senior Director of Strategic Planning NICK RUDD and Virginia-based public relations consultant JOHN CASTLEBERRY on board.
Rudd is responsible for leading the league's investor strategy, which encompasses expansion and investment-related initiatives, and will manage the day-to-day strategic development of the Virginia team. Nick has worked alongside Commissioner Huyghue and UFL COO Bill Peterson to build out the investor base in Omaha, Virginia and other potential UFL markets. Nick was an investment banker before joining the UFL in 2009, and graduated from Columbia University where he was an All Ivy football player. Castleberry has spent more than 20 years working as an award-winning broadcast journalist. He brings an extensive knowledge of the Virginia market and contacts within the media industry to benefit the expansion team's pubic relations endeavors.
The Virginia team is launching its own web page within the official UFL website at www.ufl-football.com/virginia and is inviting football fans to join its growing social media presence at www.facebook.com/UFLVirginia and www.twitter.com/UFLVirginia.
