U.S. Soccer Announces Nominees for 2019 Female Player of the Year Award

Chicago - National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) players Julie Ertz, Rose Lavelle, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Alyssa Naeher and Megan Rapinoe are this year's nominees for the 2019 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year award, U.S. Soccer announced today.

Voting for the award starts today and closes on Dec. 6, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. ET. The winner will be announced during the second week of December.

All six players played key roles in a historic year for the U.S. women's national team, as the team went 20-1-3 and claimed their record fourth 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup title. Lloyd led the team with 16 goals in 23 games and is the highest active goal scorer in U.S. history with 121 international goals. Rapinoe and Morgan ranked tied for second this season with nine goals each and after her standout performance in the 2019 World Cup tournament, Rapinoe was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's MVP and the Golden Boot as the top scorer. Morgan won the Silver Boot Award in France after scoring six goals in six matches, including her game-winning goal vs. England in the Semifinal. Ertz played the third most minutes on the team this year and scored her first World Cup goal on June 16 against Chile. Lavelle made her World Cup debut in France against Thailand and scored the memorable, game-clinching goal in the World Cup Final vs. the Netherlands. Naeher earned 19 caps in 2019, a single season best, and recorded her 30th career clean sheet in the World Cup Final becoming the fifth goalkeeper to earn a shutout in a Women's World Cup Final.

In NWSL play, Ertz and Lavelle were named to the 2019 NWSL Best XI. Lloyd, Naeher and Rapinoe were named to the Second XI.

Morgan was named U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2018 and 2012. Ertz was honored in 2017 and Lloyd won in 2008 and 2015.

Votes for U.S. Soccer Player of the Year awards are collected from respective National Team coaches, National Team players who have earned a cap in 2019, members of the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors, U.S. Soccer Athletes' Council, National Women's Soccer League head coaches for the USWNT, select media members and former players and administrators. In addition, select college coaches vote for the USWNT award.

Julie Ertz, Chicago Red Stars

The Chicago Red Stars midfielder played a total of 14 games and 1,260 minutes in 2019. She had a total of 51 clearances and 13 interceptions. Ertz tackle rate was 64% while her duels rate was 57.6%. She recorded a 72.7% pass rate average with a total of 713 passes.

Rose Lavelle, Washington Spirit

The Washington Spirit midfielder was named the Best IX while playing in just six games in 2019 and a total of 450 minutes. Her pass rate was a 74.6%, with long passes being a 58.8% rate. Lavelle scored one goal on six shots this season and earned a 60% tackle rate.

Carli Lloyd, Sky Blue FC

The Sky Blue FC forward led the team and was tied for sixth in the league this season with eight goals in 14 games played. Lloyd is ranked sixth all-time in NWSL goals(39).

Alex Morgan, Orlando Pride

Morgan appeared in six games for the Pride this season, playing 395 minutes. Morgan is tied for ninth all-time in NWSL goals(33) and tied for 11th all-time in assists(18).

Alyssa Naeher, Chicago Red Stars

The Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper recorded six shutouts in 14 games played this season and helped send the Red Stars to their first ever NWSL Championship. Naeher ranked fourth in the league this season with a 1.07 goals-against average and earned Save of the Week honors in Week 23. The goalkeeper is ranked second all-time in shutouts(30).

Megan Rapinoe, Reign FC

The Reign FC forward was named to the 2019 Second IX after appearing in five games in 2019, helping Reign FC reach the 2019 playoffs for the second year in a row. This is Rapinoe's fourth time being recognized on the NWSL Second XI list, having achieved the honor in 2013, 2015 and 2017. The forward was also named to the 2018 NWSL Best XI.
