U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team Ties Switzerland in Second Game of Vlad Dzurilla Tournament

PIESTANY, Slovakia - The U.S. National Under-17 Team tied Switzerland's National Under-18 Team, 2-2, this afternoon in its second game at the 2007 Under-18 Vlad Dzurilla Tournament.

Following a scoreless opening frame, the Swiss gained the 1-0 lead 6:18 into the second period on a power-play goal from Pascal Berger. The U.S. quickly replied with two goals in the next 1:32 of the second period to gain the 2-1 advantage. U.S. defenseman Sean Lorenz (Littleton, Colo.) tallied his second goal of the season off a feed from forward Nick Palmieri (Clinton, N.Y.) to tie the game then 12 seconds later Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) gave the U.S. the lead on goal from linemate Philip McRae (Chesterfield, Mo.). The Swiss capped off the scoring flurry with a goal 10:34 into the second frame from Lukas Cunti to even the game at 2-2.

Both U.S. netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Mattias Mischler for the Swiss closed the door in the third period to knot the game at 2-2. Maricic made 31 saves in his fifth international start of the season.

"We had another good effort this afternoon against a good all-around team in Switzerland," said U.S. Head Coach John Hynes (Warwick, R.I.). "Tomorrow's game will be key in determining the winner of the event and we need to continue to play well as a team from top to bottom in order to stay in contention."

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will face host Slovakia at 12:15 p.m. EST tomorrow in its final game of the tournament. The game can be followed live online at www.szlh.sk.

NOTES: Both the U.S. and Switzerland have tied both of its games in the tournament thus far ... McRae and Palmieri recorded their first points of the season with Team USA this afternoon after joining the team for the tournament ... Team USA visited the United States Embassy in Bratislava, Slovakia, last night after the game and had dinner with the U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia: Rodolphe "Skip" Vallee ... The U.S. National Under-17 Team topped Slovakia, 4-1 in exhibition action prior to the tournament ... The Vlad Dzurilla event is an annual competition where the U.S. National Under-17 Team faces the Under-18 National Teams from Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland ... Last year's U.S. National Under-17 Team went 3-0-0 in the tournament to earn top honors.
