
U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Sweeps NAHL's North Stars

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team kept the offense rolling this afternoon as finished a three-game weekend sweep of the Traverse City North Stars, 9-4 at the Centre Ice Arena.
After two spirited contests over as many evenings this weekend, both teams came out flying this afternoon. Traverse City got on the board first on a Mike Glaesmer goal 23 seconds into the game. Team USA responded 1:26 later when Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) tallied his 11th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. Team USA gained a 2-1 lead 13 seconds later when Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) beat North Stars netminder Stefan Shiveley on a feed from Saponari. Traverse City replied 3:43 into the contest with a Matt Hughes tally to knot the game at 2-2.
Kevin McCarey (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second period on a goal 3:04 into the period to give the U.S. a 3-2 advantage. U.S. forward Colin Moore (Medfield, Mass.) then rattled of a natural hat trick in the middle of the frame to put the U.S. up 6-2. Moore's first tally came from Joe Marciano (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Patrick Gaul (Pittsburgh, Pa.) 8:40 into the period followed by a power-play marker 44 seconds later. The hat trick goal came on a feed from Marciano 12:53 into the second period to give Team USA the four-goal advantage. Traverse City forward Patrick Nagorsen beat U.S. netminder Michael Clemente (Great Falls, Va.) with two seconds remaining in the second period to make it a 6-3 contest.
U.S. forward Justin Florek (Marquette, Mich.) tallied a power-play goal 7:25 into the final frame to give Team USA a 7-3 lead. The North Stars replied quickly with a tally from Anthony Schooley to make it a 7-4 contest mid-way through the final period.
Team USA continued to pour on the offense though, tallying two goals in the final three minutes. Defenseman Nick Pryor (Woodbury, Minn.) notched his second goal of the season on the power play with 2: 36 remaining followed by a McCarey's second goal of the day with 1:32 left in the game to give Team USA the 9-4 victory.
Clemente stopped 28-of-32 shots on the day to earn his eigth win of the season. With the weekend sweep of the North Stars Team USA moves into third place in the NAHL's north division with 48 points.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team will travel to Alpena, Mich., next weekend to battle the second-place IceDiggers on Friday and Saturday (Mar. 2-3) at 7 p.m. EST.
NOTES: Moore recorded nine points (5-4) in three games versus the North Stars this weekend ... Nine goals is the highest offensive output of the season for the U.S. National Under-17 Team ... On the weekend series, the U.S. National Under-17 Team outscored Traverse City 21-to-7.
