ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass.) and Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.) tallied three points each as the U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated the Motor City Machine, 8-4, here tonight.
Team USA started the scoring early in the first period at 4:27 when A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) passed from behind the net to an open Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.), who shot the puck into the upper left corner for the goal. Bourque made it 2-0 at 7:12 as he fired a wrist shot from the left circle that went through Motor City goalie Joe Moore.
The U.S. increased its lead to three at 4:27 of the second stanza when Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) launched a shot on the attack that bounced off of and over Moore for a power-play goal. Morin added to the scoring run at 6:04 as he trickled in a shot from the left side off a pass from Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.). William Wrenn (Anchorage, Alaska) gave the U.S. a 5-0 lead at 11:10 on a slap shot from just inside the blue line that squeezed through Moore's legs. Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) increased the lead to six at 11:45 as he picked up a loose puck between the circles and hit the back left corner of the net. Motor City got on the board at 12:36 when Jared Williams received a pass in front of the goal near the crease and beat Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.). The U.S. resumed its scoring at 16:42 when Lynch tipped in a slap shot by Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) for the goal. Motor City quickly responded at 17:30 on a goal by Jon Bobb. The Machine narrowed the deficit to 7-3 at 18:35 as Jared Williams recorded his second goal by fitting a shot underneath the left arm of Campbell.
At 4:28 of the third frame, Motor City forward Cody Holzworth narrowed the U.S. lead to three on a wraparound goal on Campbell's right side. David Valek (Orem, Utah) capped the scoring at 18:33 on a wrist shot into the upper left corner of the net for a power-play goal.
Campbell turned away 27 shots to earn the victory.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to action when they head to Fargo, N.D., for the IIHF Men's World Under-18 Championship from April 9-19.
NOTES: The U.S. out shot Motor City 53-31 ... Jack Campbell's victory was his second win in two tries as a member of the U.S. National Under-18 Team ... Jeremy Morin and Ryan Bourque notched a goal and two assists each. With his three points, Morin increased his team-leading point total to 48 and his goal total to 26, which also leads the squad. Morin took over sole possession of third place on the NTDP's all-time career goals list with his 74th career tally ... A.J. Treais' two assists improved his team-leading total to 28 ... Tonight's game marked the last contest of the season for the Under-18s versus NAHL competition.
