BOARDMAN, Ohio - Despite third-period goals from Shane Sooth (Canyon County, Calif.) and Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.), the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 3-2, here tonight at the Boardman Ice Zone.

The Phantoms jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening stanza. Kyle Verbeek notched the first goal at 10:43 after he one-timed a feed from John Huston past netminder Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich.). Nick Shkreli tapped home a rebound at 16:24 to extend Mahoning Valley's lead to two goals. Doug Clifford potted an unassisted goal with just 1:17 to play in the frame to make it 3-0.

Clifford's marker was the last allowed by Yanakeff as he stopped all 14 shots he saw during the second and third periods.

With Yanakeff pulled in favor of an extra attacker late in the third period, Sooth picked up a rebound after Emerson Etem's (Long Beach, Calif.) shot rang off the post and put the puck past goaltender Garrett Bartus at the 17:10 mark. Czarnik tallied just before the horn sounded to account for the 3-2 final. Czarnik's tally came after he intercepted Bartus' clearing attempt and fired the puck into the open net with .01 second left on the clock.

Yanakeff made 23 saves on the night.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action next weekend as it takes on the Motor City Machine, the North American Hockey League's newest team, on Friday (October 31) and Saturday night. Friday night's contest is set for a 7:00 p.m. ET start at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Both teams will meet again on Saturday night in Wyandotte, Mich., at Yack Arena for a 7:10 p.m. ET tilt.
