U.S. National Under-17 Team Falls to Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 4-0, in Game 3

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Mahoning Valley Phantoms here tonight in Game 3 of the Robertson Cup Playoffs second-round. Team USA fell to 1-2 in the best-of-five series.

At 12:56 the opening period, Brandon Saad broke in alone and slipped a backhand shot between U.S. netminder Brandon Maxwell's (Winter Park, Fla.) legs to give Mahoning Valley the 1-0 lead. The Phantoms doubled their advantage when George Saad chipped the puck over the blocker of Maxwell with just 48 seconds left in the stanza.

After a scoreless second frame, Brandon Saad came down the right wing and wired a wrist shot past Maxwell just 2:44 into the final period to make it 3-0. Cole Schneider scored a minute into a Phantoms power play at 8:27 to cap the scoring.

Maxwell made 31 saves on the night.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will look to stave off elimination tomorrow in Youngstown when it meets the Phantoms at 7:15 p.m. ET for Game 4.

NOTES: Emerson Etem (Long Beach, Calif.) leads Team USA with seven points (3-4) in the postseason, while Jacob Fallon (Southlake, Texas) is second with six points (2-4) ... Should Team USA force a Game 5, it will be played on Saturday (April 25) at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube at 7 p.m. ET.
