
U.S. National Under-17 Team continues to roll after Four Nations Tournament Championship

THIS WEEK:
After a first place finish at the 2005 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia, the U.S. National Under-17 Team travels to Durham, N.H., to participate in the Beantown Fall Classic. Team USA will face two opponents from the Eastern Junior Hockey League: the Boston Jr. Bruins and the Manchester (N.H.) Jr. Monarchs.
U.S. HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON:
Ron Rolston is in his second season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. He has amassed a career record with the NTDP of 54-19-9. Rolston was an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks at Lake Superior State University, Clarkson University, Harvard University and Boston College prior to joining the NTDP.

"Playing EJHL teams will be a good measuring stick for our guys in terms of competition. We are on a pretty good run right now and it is important for our guys to keep working hard, staying focused and playing a complete game."

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE:
Boston College freshman forward Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, Mich.) earned Hockey East's Rookie of the Week award after scoring both BC goals, including the game winner with less than six minutes to play, in a 2-1 win at Vermont on Sunday, (Nov. 13) ... Brett Sterling (Pasadena, Calif.) of Colorado College continues to lead the nation in scoring with 20 points (11-9) in 12 games ... New York Rangers 2004 first-round selection Al Montoya (Glenview, Ill.) has started the season with a 5-1-0 record, .929 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average for the Rangers' top minor league affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack ... University of Michigan freshman defenseman Jack Johnson (Faribault, Minn.) was named the CSTV/HCA Rookie of the Month for October.
PLAYER NOTES:
Goaltenders Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Josh Unice (Toledo, Ohio) have both verbally commited to play collegiately in the 2007-08 school year. Phillips will attend the University of Notre Dame and Unice will play at Bowling Green State (Ohio) University ... Jimmy Hayes (Dorchester, Mass.) will join the team again for the Beantown Fall Classic. Hayes scored two goals in four games with the team at the Four Nations Tournament.
TIDBITS:
The U.S. National Under-17 Team is undefeated in it's last eight games ... The last loss came to two-time North American Hockey League champion Texas (Oct. 21) at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn. ... NTDP Head Coach Ron Rolston has not lost an international competition (11-0-1) on the bench of an NTDP team since joining the program before the 2004-05 season.
LAST WEEK:
The U.S. National Under-17 Team (2-0-1) won the championship at the 2005 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament in Piestany, Slovakia. Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the tournament in goals and points with four. Team captain Teddy Ruth (Naperville, Ill.) was named the tournament's most outstanding defenseman. Game summaries from the weekend games are below.

PIESTANY, Slovakia - The U.S. National Under-17 Team (2-0-1) tied Switzerland (1-1-1), 2-2 to win the championship at the 2005 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament. Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) gave Team USA the early lead with a goal 1:03 into the game on a feed from Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and James vanRiemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.). Hayes led the tournament with four goals in three games. Switzerland evened the game 2:53 into the second period on a power play goal from Gregory Sciaroni. Only 4:12 later, Team USA fell behind in the game when Adam Hasani gave Switzerland the lead. Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) tied the game at two with a goal at the 8: 48 mark of the second period. In the third period, Team USA dominated the play, but were unable to get one past Switzerland goalie Damiano Ciacco. USA's defense was tough in the third, USA goaltender Josh Unice (Toledo, Ohio) only faced two shots, stopping both.

PIESTANY, Slovakia - The U.S. National Under-17 Team topped Four Nations Tournament host Slovakia, 4-1. Jimmy Hayes (Dorchester, Mass.), scoring two goals in his second game with the U.S. National Under-17 Team and Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) added another in the victory. Ryan Hayes got the scoring started for Team USA midway through the first period. Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) assisted on the tally. The lone goal of the second period was scored by Jimmy Hayes with his team on the power play. Team USA's stingy defense allowed only three shots on goal in the second. Jimmy Hayes struck again for USA seven minutes into the thrid period. Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) finished the scoring for Team USA two minutes later. Slovakia scored the game's final goal at 17: 35. Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) stopped 26 of 27 shots to earn the victory for Team USA.

PIESTANY, Slovakia - The U.S. National Under-17 Team topped Russia, 5-2, in the first game of the 2005 Four Nations Tournament. Ryan Hayes (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the way for Team USA offensively with two goals, including one on a penalty shot in the third period. After Russia took a 1-0 lead into the second period, Hayes notched a power-play goal at 6:27 of the second to knot the score. Ian Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored two minutes later and James vanRiemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) scored at 16: 21 to give Team USA a 3-1 lead going into the third. Russia cut the United States' lead to 3-2 28 seconds into the third period. Maksim Goncharov was whistled for throwing his stick just 30 seconds later, however, giving Team USA a penalty shot. Hayes buried the chance to give USA the 4-2 lead. Colin Wilson (Greenwich, Conn.) finished the scoring for Team USA at the 12:27 mark of the third.
UP NEXT:
Next week, the U.S. National Under-17 Team will host three NAHL games at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. The Cleveland Barons come to town on Wednesday (Nov. 23) and Traverse City will visit the Cube on Saturday (Nov. 26).
ABOUT THE NTDP:
Founded in 1997, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program was created to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. Located in Ann Arbor, Mich., the program has been instrumental in helping the United States capture gold medals at the 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. This past summer, 15 NTDP alumni were selected in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. In the seven years NTDP players have been eligible for the draft, 107 players have been selected.
