ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The U.S. National Under-17 Team rebounded to defeat Traverse City 4-2 tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube to even their opening round series at 1-1.

Traverse City jumped on the board first when Jonathan Juliano caught a pass behind the Team USA defense, walked in alone beat USA netminder Josh Unice (Toledo, Ohio) to give the North Stars the 1-0 advantage. The U.S. National Under-17 Team swarmed the North Stars net in the first frame, out shooting Traverse City 15-2.

Late in the second period, James vanRiemsdyk (Middletown, N.J.) finished a perfect passing play from Philip McRae (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Greg Squires (White Plains, N.Y.) to even the game at one.

Team USA gained the lead 6:47 into the third period when Kevin Shattenkirk (New Rochelle, N.Y.) buried a perfect back-door feed from Tony Mosey (Prior Lake, Minn.) on the power play. McRae extended the USA lead to two, 2:51 later when he sniped the top right corner over the shoulder of North Stars netminder Ryan Donovan. On the ensuing power play for the North Stars, Juliano scored his second of the night on a scramble in front of Unice.

USA forward Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) stole the puck from the North Stars deep in the U.S. end and out skated the Traverse City power-play squad to give Team USA the 4-2 lead when he capped off the great effort by beating Donovan with a strong wrist shot.

"We really battled as a team tonight," said Ron Rolston, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "Traverse City had a hot goalie again tonight, but we were able to create grade A opportunities and convert when we needed to."

The U.S. National Under-17 will travel to Traverse City next weekend (April 7-8) for games three and four of this best-of-five series. Game five, if necessary, will be Sunday, April 9, at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube and will begin at 7 pm.
