FC Kansas City News Release
KANSAS CITY, Missouri - FC Kansas City defender Amy LePeilbet has announced her retirement from professional soccer after a very successful career, which includes two National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) championships and 84 caps with the U.S. Women's National Team.
"It has been a pleasure having Amy [LePeilbet] as part of our club for the past two years," Director of Soccer Operations and General Manager Huw Williams said. "Her outstanding performances were instrumental in helping us capture back-to-back titles. However, as good of a player she is, she is an even better person. She will be greatly missed but we wish her the very best in her future endeavors."
LePeilbet, 33, will end her professional career, which started in 1998 when she was one of only three high school students to be named to the Chicago Cobras roster. Throughout the years, she played for the Arizona Heatwave, Pali Blues, Boston Breakers, Chicago Red Stars and FC Kansas City after graduating from Arizona State University where she started all games in her career for a grand total of 74 matches.
The Spokane, Washington native was a member of the U-21 U.S. National Team from 2002-2003 before making her senior team debut in 2004 against Sweden.
In 2011, she played in all six matches at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup, where the USA finished second. One year later, she helped the team win a gold medal at the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
Last season, LePeilbet was named to the 2015 NWSL Best XI as well as FC Kansas City's Most Valuable Player.
AMY LEPEILBET'S STATEMENT:
After a very fulfilling 12-year career, I have decided to retire from professional soccer. I know in my heart it is time. As I embark on this new stage of my life, I will carry so many wonderful memories with me. I love the beautiful game, but most of all; I am thankful for the friendships and relationships that I have formed throughout the years. It is very hard to say goodbye, but I know it is the right thing for me at this time.
The last two seasons playing for FC Kansas City was such a pleasure, and was certainly a perfect ending to my career. Winning back-to-back championships alongside wonderful teammates, coaches, and staff made my experience even better and has left me feeling good about stepping away.
Thank you for the opportunity to play for FC Kansas City! I am incredibly thankful for the organization, the coaches, the whole staff, my teammates and the fantastic fans!
Amy
