Arizona Sting News Release
GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- In recognition of their outstanding performances in the Ontario Lacrosse Association this summer, Major Series Lacrosse honored two members of the Arizona Sting earlier this week with league awards. Sting forward Andrew Lazore was named the league's Rookie of the Year and defender Scott Self was named Defenseman of the Year.
MSL commissioner Jim Brady announced Tuesday that Lazore, who played for the St. Regis Indians this summer, would be receiving the 2006 Gene Dopp Memorial Trophy as the MSL's Rookie of the Year. Lazore registered 22 goals (the most amongst MSL rookies) and 18 assists for 40 points in 16 games. He recorded seven multi-goal games on the season, with a season-high four points twice versus Kitchener-Waterloo (2006-06-03) and Brooklin (2006-07-18).
Last winter, as a member of the Sting, Lazore appeared in three games, registering 2G-3A-5P in addition to 7 loose balls and 7 shots on goal. The 21-year old native of Akwesasne, Mohawk Nation, was taken by Arizona in the sixth round (66th overall) of last year's NLL Entry Draft.
On Thursday, Commissioner Brady announced that Self, a veteran defender with the Peterborough Lakers, would be receiving the Merv McKenzie Trophy as Defenseman of the Year for a second-straight season. Self becomes just the fourth player in league history to be awarded the McKenzie Trophy in back-to-back years. The Lakers' defense held opponents to a league-best 8.83 goals per game this summer en route to a 13-4-1 record. Offensively, Self contributed 8G-6A-14P for the defending league champions.
Last season with the Sting, Self led all Arizona defensemen in scoring with 1G-17A-18P. The 26-year old also appeared in his first career NLL All-Star game last year, registering one assist and two loose balls in the match. In three seasons in the Valley of the Sun, the 6'2", 205 lb. defender has registered 8G-44A-52P. His 221 loose balls rank him third in franchise history.
