Fayetteville Patriots News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., July 9, 2003 â Terrell McIntyre impressed Fayetteville Patriots fans with determination, heart and his exceptional ballhandling skills. Matt Barnes impressed Patriots fans with quickness and high-flying, exciting dunks.
Both men will try to make the same impressions on NBA coaches and scouts this summer in the hopes of making an NBA roster this fall. The Milwaukee Bucks invited McIntyre to join their summer league roster, while the Seattle SuperSonics made Barnes a summer league invitee.
McIntyre made his summer league debut Tuesday night in the Pepsi Pro Summer League in Orlando, Fla. McIntyre missed out an opportunity to play for the Orlando Magic summer league team last year because of an ankle injury.
On Tuesday night he went 0-for-3 from the floor in a 72-61 loss to the Miami Heat. The Pepsi Pro Summer League runs from July 8-12 with some of the games being televised on NBA TV. Visit http://www.nba.com/nba_tv/summer_league.html to view the complete NBA TV schedule.
Over the first two years of the Fayetteville Patriots existence, McIntyre has scored more points than any other Fayetteville player with 1,214. He also holds the team's career record for steals with 136 and is second in assists with 445 in 89 games played.
McIntyre has also hit 88 percent of his free throws and 41 percent of his 3-pointers since joining the Patriots in 2001.
A native of Raeford, N.C., McIntyre was a football, basketball and baseball star at Hoke County High School. He played college basketball at Clemson, where he became the school's all-time leader in 3-point field goals made, steals, minutes played and 3-point field goals attempted.
Barnes, a Santa Clara, Calif., native, completed his first season with the Patriots by averaging 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds. He started 12 games during the 2002-2003 season. The Patriots were 8-4 in those games. He hit a team-record six three-pointers â going 6-for-6 for the game -- against the Asheville Altitude on Jan. 3.
He scored a season-high 21 points and had seven rebounds against Roanoke on Dec. 13. The SuperSonics will play their first game in the Southern California Pro League in Long Beach, Calif., on Thursday night against the Dallas Mavericks.
The game will be televised on NBA TV. The Southern California Pro League runs from July 6-20. Barnes played college basketball in California at UCLA. He led the Bruins to four NCAA appearances. Three of those appearances resulted in Sweet Sixteen berths.
He averaged 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds during his senior season at UCLA and was second-round selection in the 2002 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies (46th pick overall). The Grizzlies traded him to Cleveland soon after.
Barnes was one of the Cavaliers final cuts before being selected by the Patriots in the 2002 NBDL draft.
