Two Marauders to Raid the Swamp

January 18, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - As the Fayetteville SwampDogs work their way toward the 2016 Petitt Cup Championship, two players from the Keystone State will play key roles.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs are pleased to announce the signing of two players from nationally-ranked Millersville University. All-American junior infielder David Summerfield, and speedy redshirt-junior outfielder Dan Neff will take their talents to The Swamp this summer.

Summerfield, a St. Georges, Del. native, is coming off a historic sophomore campaign for the Marauders, where he led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in batting average (.452), and finished third nationally in Division II. Summerfield tied the Millersville record for hits in a season with 80, despite missing four games.

Summerfield finished in the top-30 nationally in on-base percentage (.505), walked more times (20) than he struck out (17), and finished third on the Marauders with 46 runs batted in. The lefty-hitting middle infielder became only the fifth Millersville position player to earn All-American honors, and was named the MVP of the PSAC Tournament.

"Dave is a very talented left-handed hitting middle infielder who won the batting title in one of the most challenging D2 conferences in the country," said SwampDogs manager Anthony Williams. "We're looking forward to the balance he will bring to our lineup this summer as well as a championship mindset coming from a winning program."

Not to be overshadowed, Neff is a dynamic player in his own right. Neff, a Lancaster, Pa. native, hit .351 for the Marauders and led the team in both triples (5) and hit by pitches (11). Neff swiped 17 bases in 21 attempts for Millersville and scored 56 runs in 56 games played.

Neff transferred to Millersville after beginning his collegiate career at Coastal Carolina University.

"Dan is a dynamic outfielder who will be part of what could be the fastest outfield in the Coastal Plain League in 2016," said Williams. "He's the everyday center fielder at one of the most competitive programs in the country and was an All-Star in the Great Lakes League last summer."

Millersville University is coached by Jon Shehan, who enters his ninth season at the helm of the squad. Under his guidance the Marauders have won five PSAC Eastern Division championships, one PSAC Championship, have made it to the NCAA Atlantic Regionals four times, including the last three seasons. He has coached 10 All-Americans and 43 All-Conference players.

Millersville enters the 2016 season with a #18 preseason ranking from Collegiate Baseball Magazine, the third-consecutive preseason ranking for the team. Millersville University is located in Millersville, Pa.

The Fayetteville SwampDogs home opener for the 2016 season is Wednesday, June 1st. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 910-426-5900, or by visiting www.goswampdogs.com/tickets.
