East Kentucky Miners News Release

PIKEVILLE, KY. - Fans had an opportunity to name the East Kentucky Miners mascot Tuesday, Nov. 13 during Miner Madness at the East Kentucky Expo Center. The receptive fanbase took advantage of the chance to name the mascot of the Continental Basketball Association expansion team. Members of the Miners organization deliberated over hundreds of entries before choosing Hard Hat Harry as the winning name for the East Kentucky professional basketball squad's mascot.

Two Miners fans - Jason Beverly (Jenkins, Ky.) and Terry Young (Pikeville, Ky.) - shared the winning entry. Beverly and Young will each receive two season tickets, an autographed team ball, a picture with the mascot and recognition before the tip-off of the home opener Sunday, Nov. 18 versus the Pittsburgh Xplosion. East Kentucky will open its inaugural season on Friday, Nov. 16 in a road game against the Pittsburgh team.

A canary, Hard Hat Harry will be interactive with Miners fans throughout the 2007-08 season.

One of coal mining's earliest systems for warning of the presence of methane gas, the canary in the coal mine was extremely effective and rather easy to read - if the bird died, miners had to get out of the shaft.

Miner Madness attracted fans from numerous Eastern Kentucky counties, including Pike, Letcher, Knott, Perry, Martin, Floyd, Johnson, Magoffin and Harlan.

The Miners will play 24 home games inside the East Kentucky Expo Center during the 2007-08 season. East Kentucky is one of four expansion teams in the CBA (Continental Basketball Association).
