Two Drafts in One Day

August 29, 2002 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
New Jersey Storm News Release

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - The National Lacrosse League has announced that they will hold a Dispersal Draft of the Montreal Express players on the morning of Saturday, September 21 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The Dispersal Draft will be conducted prior to the 2002 Entry Draft, which is scheduled for 12:00 noon the same day. The New Jersey Storm will take part in both drafts, with two selections in the Dispersal Draft and seven in the annual Entry Draft.

The Dispersal Draft will allow the League's twelve member clubs to select players from the Montreal Express team roster. Earlier this month, the League's Board of Governors granted a one-year suspension to the Montreal Express franchise, as requested by team ownership. The Express' All-Star captain Tracey Kelusky (44 G, 50 A) is expected to be the first player chosen.

As a result of the Storm's finish last year (5-11), the team has been given the fourth and 16th overall selections in the Dispersal Draft. This draft will consist of two rounds. Pursuant to League by-laws, teams that did not make the playoffs shall have priority of selection in reverse order of the previous year's League standing. In the case of similar won-loss records, tiebreakers are used to determine the order.

New Jersey's first selection in the Entry Draft is currently the third pick of the Second Round (15th overall). The Storm swapped their First Round pick for Buffalo's Second Rounder as part of the recent blockbuster trade in which New Jersey received perennial All-Star Roy Colsey. The Entry Draft pool consists largely of top American collegiate players and Canadian junior stars. www.njstorm.com will provide the results both drafts on September 21.

The New Jersey Storm recently completed a successful inaugural season at the Continental Airlines Arena in which the team won four of its last six games and averaged nearly 6,000 fans per contest. The 2002-2003 National Lacrosse League season will begin in late December. Storm season ticket plans are on sale now.
