Danville Dans News Release
The Toronto Blue Jays have announced this year's recipients of the R. Howard Webster Awards, recognizing the most valuable players at each of the club's minor league affiliated teams. And the Danville Dans are pleased to say that two former Danville Dans were honored with a selection.
Ryan Schimpf, a 2007 Dan from LSU, picked up his first Webster MVP Award for the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In his 7th professional season, the utility player appeared in 76 games, with a .271 average, with 20 doubles, 20 home runs and 56 RBIs along with 42 walks. Schimpf led the Fisher Cats in home runs, slugging pct (.581) and OPS (.959). His 20 home runs tied for first in the Eastern League, while his slugging and OPS ranked third.
Though he played part of the year with Schimpf in New Hampshire, Wil Browning earned a Webster MVP nod with the High-A Dunedin Blue Jays. Browning - a 2010 Dan and former LSU Tiger - posted a 2-1 record with a 0.78 ERA and 22 saves in 31 appearances before moving up to the Fisher Cats. His 22 saves led the Florida State League, and he allowed runs in just 2 of his 31 appearances. The RHP walked just two batters while fanning 40 in 34.2 innings. Browning pitched 4.1 innings in the 2010 Prospect League Playoffs, and appeared in the Championship Game with the Dans.
"We're very happy to have these two former Dans recognized for their outstanding minor league season," said Dans managing partner Jeanie Cooke. "We're proud of all our Dans - current, former and future. It's always exciting to see the players that were in Danville do so well as they continue their careers."
There are 10 former Dans currently wearing an MLB uniform, with nearly 25 others playing professional baseball in the Minor Leagues.
