Greeneville Astros News Release
Elizabethton, TN - The Greeneville Astros (26-26) came up short in their attempt to overcome an early deficit to the Elizabethton Twins (31-22) on Thursday night and ultimately were defeated, 5-3. With the loss, the Astros are now one game out of the playoff race and are four-and-a-half games behind the Appalachian League West-leading Twins.
Trey Vavra once again led the attack for the Twins. In the first inning, it was his two-run double that gave them the initial lead. Then, he scored on a Brian Navarreto sacrifice fly to give the Twins a 3-0 advantage.
Two innings later, it was Tyler Mautner that hit a sacrifice fly to add another score. Then, Vavra scored again from third following an Astros fielding error.
Vavra finished the night two-for-three with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI. Meanwhile, leadoff man Jeremias Pineda and Tanner English also played major roles. Pineda was four-for-five with a run and a double, and English was one-for-two with two runs and a double.
Trailing 5-0, the Astros began to cut into the Twins' lead in the fifth inning. With runners at second and third with one out, a Luis Reynoso ground out allowed Jacob Nottingham to score the Astros' first run. Then, Jeffry Santos knocked in another run on a RBI single to make the score 5-2.
In the sixth, the Astros' Edwin Medina led off with a walk and stole two bases to move over to third. Then, Yonathan Mejia singled to score a run and cut the Twins' lead to two.
Still down by two entering the ninth inning, the Astros had runners on first and second with one out. However, the final two Astros' hitters struck out to leave the tying run stranded at first.
Twins' starting pitcher Michael Cederoth (4-2) earned the win as he struck out five batters over five innings while giving up two runs, with one earned run, on two hits. Dereck Rodriguez entered in the ninth inning and gave up two hits but held the Astros scoreless to pick up the save.
The Astros will face the Twins for the final time this season on Friday night at Joe O'Brien Field. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
