Twellman Knots Score Late

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The New England Revolution salvaged a point on the road Wednesday evening, recording a 1-1 draw against the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City's Igor Simutenkov opened the scoring in the second half with his second goal of the season, but Revolution forward Taylor Twellman notched the equalizer in stoppage time.

The best chance in the first half came in the 37th minute of play, as Joe-Max Moore swung the ball into the near post on a Revolution counter. Taylor Twellman's diving header flashed just outside the post, but goalkeeper Tony Meola touched the ball in passing, conceding the corner. On the ensuing play, defender Joe Franchino found Moore in the box with the in-swinging corner. Moore nodded the ball back to the exposed near post, but Kansas City defender Kerry Zavagnin was in place to clear the ball off of the goal line.

Kansas City closed out the half with a dangerous chance of their own, as midfielder Francisco Gomez played a long ball into an empty seam, putting the ball in the path of the tandem of Chris Brown and Chris Klein. With an open shot on net, Klein hammered the ball off of the bounce, but put it high over the bar.

Kansas City took advantage of a New England substitution in the second half to finally break the deadlock in the 69th minute of play. As Pat Noonan came on for Brian Kamler, the Wizards wasted no time in launching a quick counter. Preki played a perfectly weighted ball down the center channel, where forward Igor Simutenkov pinched in between New England's Carlos Llamosa and Franchino to break free. One-on-one with `keeper Adin Brown, Simutenkov blasted the ball into the roof of the net for the 1-0 lead.

New England pushed forward in the latter stages of the game, denying Kansas City many quality chances while the Revs looked to equalize. The Revolution knotted the game at 1-1 in stoppage time, as Taylor Twellman scored the equalizer on a controversial play. When the ball was played into the box by Moore, midfielder Steve Ralston was behind the Wizards defense. However, as Ralston was ruled to be passively offside, Twellman was able to run onto the bouncing ball and knock home a side volley shot to send the game into overtime.

The goal marked the fifth time in six matches that the Wizards have given up a lead in a game. Kansas City will play their third match in eight days this Saturday, May 17th when the Wizards head to RFK Stadium to face D.C. United (7:30 pm ET, Fox Sports World). New England also returns to action on Saturday, hosting the Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium (6:00 pm ET).
