MLS Renews Yahoo! Sponsorship
Published on May 14, 2003 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Wednesday, May 14, 2003) - Major League Soccer's properties arm, Soccer United Marketing, announced today that Yahoo! has renewed its multi-year deal as an Official Sponsor of Major League Soccer. Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com) has been an Official Sponsor of MLS since 1999 and will continue as the league's official online partner, while Yahoo! en español (http://yahooenespanol.com) becomes the uniform sponsor of the San Jose Earthquakes in addition to serving as MLS' official online Spanish-language partner. In addition, Yahoo! will feature live video and audio of an average of three MLS games per week on its Yahoo! Platinum service.
"Broadening our partnership with multiple Yahoo! services allows MLS to tap into the power and reach of the Internet," said Mark Noonan, Executive Vice President of Marketing & Fan Development for MLS. "Through Yahoo! Sports, the Yahoo! Platinum service and the Spanish-language content on Yahoo! en español, our core constituents enjoy yet another medium for MLS game action and information."
"Our goal is to be a premier online sports marketing partner for leagues, teams and advertisers," said Brian Grey, general manager of Yahoo! Sports. "MLS has proven to be a great marketing platform for the past several years and we're excited to continue the relationship."
Specific marketing assets included in the sponsorship will enable Yahoo! to utilize various MLS platforms to promote different Yahoo! services. Both Yahoo! Sports and Yahoo! en español will receive assets such as national broadcast media inventory, in-stadium promotion, use of MLS logos, footage and player likenesses and other activation opportunities.
Yahoo! Platinum (http://platinum.yahoo.com), a premium online video and audio service, includes programming from leading entertainment, sports and news providers for both broadband and narrowband consumers. With a total of 87 MLS games available on Yahoo! Platinum beginning this weekend and up to four contests each week during the remaining 25 weeks of the 2003 regular season, MLS fans can watch live games on their desktop that they can't see on local TV, and also watch archived games from past weeks.
