Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - Another beautiful sunny afternoon in the low 80s, but winds at thirty miles per hour set the tone for workouts. The Turfcats held practice at Lyndon B. Johnson High School and the team was in shorts. I was bouncing around the field with my camera and chatting with players and fans.
Turfcats Fan Curtis Parkerson, which made the drive from San Marcos said, "The team looks good and they have speed this year that coach is really putting them through it today."
The offensive line was working with Assistant Coach Derik "Butch" Hadnot on assignments and basic drills. Alabama Birmingham product Andy Galloway and Texas Tech's Joshua Sooter seemed to be positioning them for the long haul this year.
It is too early to say anything about the offensive line. However, I really enjoy watching Galloway and Sooter. They are always smiling and always seem to be having a good time.
QB Clint Toon continued to make good accurate throws this afternoon and WR Darrick Wallace from Grambling State continued to look great. I worked with Wallace with my first team in indoor football in Katy and he appears to be in game ready shape for only the second day of camp. Robert Quiroga from the Los Angeles Avengers made one of the best catches of the afternoon a 20-25 yard leaping sideline catch. Assistant Coach Kerry Cash ran a spirited receiver group that played well in one on one drills with defensive backs.
Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban said, "The team is showing good effort but it is still a long way to the opener versus the Mudbugs, we must get better each day."
There will be film for the team tomorrow, as rain is expected in Central Texas. QB Deron Ellis looked a lot better this afternoon than he did in the first practice. He appeared to be taking the snaps and making hand-offs well and he looked very accurate and in rhythm.
CB Cory Perez continued to play well defensively and RB David Banks continued to make catches in stride and make some good runs up the middle.
The team looked solid for this early but they still have a long road on their journey to be competitive in the expected tough first year Southern Indoor Football League.
