Austin Turfcats News Release
Austin, TX - The Austin Turfcats jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and never looked back cruising to an easy 55-27 victory over the Houma Conquerors at Adfirmative.com Field at the Travis County Expo Center.
Ray Hall got the Turfcats on the board early with a 9-yard run and Derrick Wallace added a 50-yard missed field goal return in first quarter action for the Turfcats. The Conquerors got their first points with a Gerald Landry 21-yard grab for a score with 3:12 left in the opening stanza to close the gap 14-6.
The 2nd quarter remained mostly scoreless, until Deron Ellis capped off a 4-play, 3:20 drive for a touchdown. The T'Cats scored again after a Michael Catchings interception was returned for a touchdown.
Following the half, Houma started the 3rd quarter with renewed life as Omar Haughbook completed a 24-yard pass to Clevan White to bring the score to 26-12. After trading scores, the Turfcats returned a missed Houma field goal to the end zone to bring the score to 40-19 to end the 3rd quarter.
Ellis continued his star performance in the 4th quarter, rushing in 35 yards for a touchdown to bring the score to 47-19 with 9:17 to go in the game. Houma would make their final score of the night as Haughbook connected on a 23-yard pass to White. Haughbook would add the two point conversion to bring it to 47-27. The Turfcats did not let up, however, as David Banks scored on a 6-yard run. The Turfcats would then go on a 2-point conversion pass from Ellis to Earvine to bring the final score to 55-27 at the 0:54 mark.
Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban commented postgame, "We came out strong, offensively we held on to the football. Defensively we kept pressure on them, and special teams played a solid game for us tonight. We are happy to be 3-1 in the SIFL."
Conquerors Head Coach Franklin Thomas said, "Austin played a good game, and obviously we made too many mistakes to win a football game. You can't win football games with as many mistakes as we made tonight."
Turfcats General Manager/Vice-President Ronald Oswalt added, "The team is improving week by week and have exceeded first year expectations."
