AUSTIN, Texas - The first of four is in the books and in the Turfcats' favor. The Turfcats defeated in-state rivals Texas Pirates with a final score of 20-38.

The Turfcats got on the scoreboard first with a Darren Brown field goal five minutes into the first quarter. Those were the only points of the quarter, making the score 0-3 for the Turfcats.

During the second quarter, the Turfcats capped off a 6:16 long drive with a touchdown when Darrick Wallace caught a 21 yard pass from Deron Ellis, with Darren Brown tacking on the extra point putting the Turfcats up by 10. The Turfcats special teams put their mark on the scoreboard when Corry Perez ran a blocked field goal in for a touchdown. The Pirates put their first points on the board with a seven yard touchdown pass from Trumaine Dorsey to Chris Miller and an extra point by Chris Maravagolia. This was the last score of the quarter and the Turfcats headed into the locker room for half time with a 16-7 lead.

The second half got under way with the Pirates scoring on their opening drive. Dorsey scored the touchdown on a seven yard run. The Turfcats answered on their next possession completing a five play drive with an Ellis to Nick Lewis seven yard touchdown pass. JR Turner put a quick end to the Pirates next possession with an interception which led to a Robert Quiroga five yard rushing touchdown. After Brown added the extra point the quarter closed with the Turfcats ahead 29-14.

In the fourth quarter the Turfcats scored for their third straight possession in a row with a field goal by Brown. The Pirates then answered with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Dorsey to Kenyatta Tatum but failed to complete the two-point conversion. This was the last score of the game as Turner then committed a fumble but the Pirates failed to capitalize on the opportunity. The game ended with a final score of 20-38 in the Turfcats favor.

"I'm proud of how we kept fighting," said Turfcats assistant coach Kerry Cash. "As a whole group, we were a little out of sync. I think we need to go get better at what we do, get a little more chemistry at what we do, get a good week of practice and see where the chips fall."

Round two of the 290 rivalry is scheduled for May 30 in Houston with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
