Austin Turfcats News Release

Houma, LA - The Austin Turfcats struck quick and often as they raced to a 33-7 halftime lead and never looked back in a blowout 64-32 win on the road versus the Houma Conquerors in their home opener at the Terrebonne-Houma Civic Center.

David Banks, a Langston University product, scored the first points of the game on a rushing play and Darren Brown added the PAT with 9:32 left in first quarter. Kevin Earvine would get the defense going with a safety with 5:41 left in the first quarter and pushed the lead to 9-0. Banks said, "We came out well and played well together, we redeemed ourselves after the first game and we proved we can move the ball."

The defense led by Earvine would step up once again with a safety on a blocked kick and the Turfcats led 12-0 as two minutes were left in the opening stanza. Earvine said postgame, "I am happy with our performance but we have a long way to go in the season."

Another blocked kick early in the second quarter pushed the Turfcats advantage to 14-0. Brown added a field goal for a 17-0 lead. Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban put the team on cruise control and the team led by a 33-7 margin after Brown added a 37-yard field goal as the buzzer sounded to end the first half. Both the offense and defense played well and dominated first half action over the Conquerors.

The Conquerors would come out of the locker room with a desire to make a game of it in the second half as they closed the gap to 40-20 but that would be a close as they could get heading into the final quarter. David Banks would end the scoring on a rushing touchdown with 2:31 left to play to seal the team victory.

Big plays by Jackie Warren, Darrick Wallace, David Banks, and Tim Cook solidified the road win for the Turfcats. Turfcats Head Coach Chris Duliban commented postgame, "We were focused tonight and played much better than opening night, and this is just a taste of how we can play this year."
