Turfcats and Crunch Gear Up for an I-35 Showdown

June 2, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Austin Turfcats News Release

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Turfcats (4-1) are anxiously awaiting their first match up against the North Texas Crunch (5-0) of the Independent Indoor Football Alliance. Not only is this the Crunch's first meeting with the Turfcats, but it is their first game against any team in the Southern Indoor Football League.

The Crunch plays their home games in The Colony, a suburb of Dallas, but will play all of their SIFL games on the road in their opponents' arenas. On May 24 the SIFL invited the Crunch to participate in the rest of the 2009 season as a travel team. This invitation came after the league expelled the PASM Florida Kings.

The Turfcats are coming off a 38-20 home win over the Texas Pirates on May 23. During the first half, Darren Brown kicked a field goal, Darrick Wallace caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Deron Ellis, and Corry Perez returned a blocked field goal giving the Turfcats 16 points. The Pirates got on the board with a Trumaine Dorsey to Chris Miller 7-yard touchdown pass ending the half with a 7-16 score.

The second half opened with Dorsey scoring on a 7-yard run on the Pirates opening drive. The Turfcats then scored on their next three possessions. First Nick Lewis, in his first game of the season, caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Ellis. Then JR Turner ended the Pirates drive with an interception which led to a Robert Quiroga 5-yard rushing touchdown. On the next possession Brown kicked his second field goal of the night.

The Pirates scored next with a Dorsey to Kenyatta Tatum 32-yard touchdown pass but they failed to complete the 2-point conversion. Shon Mitchell had the last score of the night with a 42-yard run. Brown was not given the opportunity to attempt the point after as the Pirates team conceded the game with 43 seconds remaining on the clock. This ended the game with a final score of Pirates 20, Turfcats 38.

The Crunch is undefeated this season and has clinched a spot in the IIFA championship in July. Their most recent win came on Saturday with a 40-20 win over the Texas Smash (1-1). While the Crunch look to improve their record to 6-0 and make an impression on the SIFL, the Turfcats look to continue their four game win streak and prove they're the team to beat in the league.
