Tulsa Drillers News Release

The 80th Texas League All-Star Game was played Tuesday night in Springfield, Missouri with the South Division Stars gaining an 8-5 victory over the North Division Stars. The Tulsa Drillers had a strong presence in the game with nine players appearing in the contest for the North side.

Tulsa pitcher Chase De Jong received the honor of being the starting pitcher for the North team. De Jong's night was short, as he faced only one batter and struck out Teoscar Hernandez to open the game before being removed.

Three other Drillers pitchers also appeared in the game. Scott Barlow worked the third inning and surrendered one run on two hits.

Caleb Dirks pitched the seventh for the North and gave up one run on three hits.

Jordan Schafer took the mound for the ninth inning, showcasing a pair of eye-catching turquoise spikes. The lefthander faced two batters, recording a strikeout and a walk.

Tulsa second baseman Willie Calhoun got an early start on the evening, appearing in the pre-game Bass Pro Shops Home Run Hitting Contest. Calhoun belted seven homers but did not qualify for the finals.

In the game, Calhoun started at second base and was officially 0-2 at the plate, but he did pick up an RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Alex Verdugo enjoyed a big night. He started in right field and played the entire game, finishing with three hits in five at-bats.

Jacob Scavuzzo played the full game in left field and had one hit in four plate appearances.

Drew Maggi also saw plenty of action, playing nine innings at shortstop and going 1-3 with two runs scored.

Paul Hoenecke came into the game as the reserve catcher and was hitless in two at-bats, but he did line out sharply to deep right-center field in his final at-bat.

Frisco's Ryan Cordell was named the Star of Stars and was presented with the game's Most Valuable Player Award from retiring Texas League President Tom Kayser. The leftfielder finished with three hits, including a homer, and four runs batted in for the winning South team.

A sellout crowd of 7,832 watched the game at Hammons Field.

The Tulsa All-Stars will now head to San Antonio to join their Drillers teammates. Tulsa will return to league play on Thursday and will open a three-game series against the Missions in the Alamo City.
