Tucker moves to Silverados
May 4, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
Coach Steve Tucker, who led the Jacksonville Jam to a 31-9 overall record, to the Southeast Division Championship, to a #2 ranking in the final ABA Power Ranking, and to a playoff birth in the Jam's inaugural season has moved to the Rio Grand Valley Silverados, who are themselves an expansion professional basketball franchise in the American Basketball Association that will tip-off their first season of play this Fall/Winter in the ABA.
Tucker, who has made a career out of building pro basketball franchises from the ground up will immediately take over as director of basketball operations and head coach for the RGV Silverados. This will be the sixth franchise Tucker has helped start during his long career as a pro basketball coach. Tucker also holds the record for coaching in the most professional leagues by coaching in five different leagues during his career (passing the record set by the late and legendary coach Bill Musselman).
"I'm excited about coming back to Texas to coach again. We had great success with the Texas Tycoons and during my years at Sam Houston State University. It just feels right coming back to Texas, for it is a situation that will allow me to be more comfortable in what I do and in what I bring to a pro basketball franchise. We had a great first season with the Jacksonville Jam and I wish the Jam all the best in the future." states now Silverados head coach Steve Tucker.
"I am very happy and pleased that we have brought in coach Tucker, I played for him and I have full faith in his system", said RGV Silverados Executive Director David Sykes. Coach T has been six times the Coach of the year throughout his career, he has been rated as one of the Top Ten Head Coaches on the Professional Basketball Level not Coaching in the NBA. He was rated 4th on top 10 listing by Pro Basketball News-June 2006, and overall he has an above 65 percent winning record.
The Silverados have made great progress in building the franchise over the past year with co-owners Art Gonzalez and Kevin Mitchell leading the way. The foundation has been set and now the building process continues with the hiring of coach Steve Tucker.
"He has the passion, the desire and the vision that is congruent with our vision and our passion and desire to go where we want to take this team," Silverados co-owner/vice president Kevin Mitchell said. "We truly want this team to be the flagship, the leader, someone other professional teams look at. We want to set the standard when it comes to professional teams. Coach Tucker has all the things that will help us be successful doing that."
The RGV Silverados will tip-off play for the 2007-08 ABA Season in November. The Silverados will play an 18 game home regular season schedule at the McAllen Convention Center. Season tickets are on sale now! For more information about the RGV Silverados go to www.rgvsilverados.com or call #956/668-1116 or #866/645-1116.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
