Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Phillies' Triple-A spring training squad improved to 2-0 with a 7-5 edging of the Triple-A Pirates at Pirate City Complex in Bradenton, Fla., on Wednesday.
Even though 2010 N.L. Cy Young Award Winner RHP Roy Halladay made a start for the team, it was the offense that was the story for the second consecutive game. The bats provided 10 hits - highlighted by a Tim Kennelly two-run home run - en route to the victory.
Kennelly (2-3, HR, R) and 1B Matt Rizzotti (2-4, R) paced a 10-hit attack with two hits and two RBI apiece. DH Sebastian Valle (1-2) and SS Troy Hanzawa (1-4, 2B) had an RBI each.
Halladay started and pitched the first five innings, but his line (5 ip, 7 h, 4 r, 3 er, bb, 3 k) wasn't nearly as pretty as RHP Eddie Bonine's. Entering in the sixth inning, the former Detroit Tiger potential IronPig went the next three innings, allowing four hits and just one earned run while walking one and fanning three. RHP Drew Carpenter, who is rumored to be converting into a reliever this season, worked a 10-pitch, perfect ninth inning for the save.
Bonine, 29, spent his first full season in the Majors last season with the Detroit Tigers - going 4-1, 4.63 in 47 G, 1 GS (68 ip, 84 h, 37 r, 35 er, 22 bb, 26 k) In fact, he started the season going 3-0, 0.96 in his first 14 G and boasted a career-best 16.0-inning scoreless streak from April 11 through May 15. The former 23rd rounder by San Diego in 2003 was nabbed by Detroit in the Rule 5 Draft on Dec. 12, 2005. He would later win his ML debut in a start against the Dodgers on June, 14, 2008; then made the Tigers Opening Day roster in 2009. Overall, the Columbus, Ga., native is a career 7-3, 4.74 in 62 G, 10 GS in the Major Leagues. Bonine has also pitched parts of three seasons in the International League with Toledo, going a combined 17-9, 4.20 in 35 GS, 34 GS from 2007-09.
The Triple-A Phils will next host the Triple-A Tigers on Thursday at Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Fla. First-pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
