Trio of SaberCats Bring Home Weekly AFL Awards

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Arena Football League and the SaberCats announced today that defensive back Andre Jones and wide receivers Fred Williams and Huey Whittaker earned weekly honors from the AFL for their play this past Saturday in San Jose's 51-48 playoff loss to the Arizona Rattlers. Jones was named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week for his impressive performance, Williams earned JLS Ironman of the Week honors and Whittaker hauled in the Cutters Catch of the Week for his outstanding over the wall touchdown reception on Saturday night in Phoenix.

Jones (5-11, 195, Akron) tallied three-and-a-half tackles and two interceptions, one of which was returned 20 yards for a key fourth quarter score, in San Jose's 51-48 defeat at the hands of the Rattlers. Jones was the team's second leading tackler in the regular season with 77.0 total stops and led the SaberCats with five interceptions. He also earned the same recognition in Week 18 for his performance against the New Orleans VooDoo.

Williams (6-0, 195, St. Cloud State) was named the JLS Ironman of the Week for his performance on Saturday in a losing effort. He hauled in a team-high ten passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, while also averaging 27.8 yards per kick return and making one tackle on special teams. The former St. Cloud State Husky posted a team-high 257 all-purpose yards on the night. He collects his third weekly AFL award after making the Cutters Catch of the Week on July 7 against the VooDoo and was also named the JLS Ironman for his Week 17 performance against the Chicago Rush.

Whittaker (6-5, 225, South Florida) earned the Cutters Catch of the Week for his impressive over-the-wall grab on a 30-yard touchdown in the second quarter on Saturday in Arizona. Whittaker was responsible for four total touchdowns (three receiving and one rushing), caught nine passes for 87 yards and posted an interception defensively in the SaberCats hard-fought loss to the Rattlers. The former South Florida Bull has brought in AFL weekly honors now three times, making the Cutters Catch of the Week for his reception on April 6 against the San Antonio Talons and was also named the JLS Ironman of the Week for his performance on May 26 against the Chicago Rush.
