Charlotte Eagles News Release

(Charlotte, NC) The Charlotte Eagles hosted the West Virginia Chaos of the Premiere Development League (PDL) tonight at beautiful Waddell Stadium. Dustin Swinehart scored his second goal in two nights for the 1-0 victory.

The Eagles opened the half controlling the match with possession. Charlotte got a one goal lead on a penalty kick in the 34th minute. Midfielder Jason Hotchkin was taken down in the box to draw the penalty kick. Dustin took the kick and beat goalkeeper Shaw who guessed the wrong way. It was the only goal of the first half. Charlotte outshot West Virginia 8-3 in the half.

The second half was similar to the first with the Eagles controlling most of the possession and offensive pressure, but Charlotte was unable to finish their shots in the second half. Charlotte held on to the shutout. The Eagles' closest chance at a goal in the second half came in the 88th minute off the free kick. Chris Lemon's sent a rocket on goal from about 30 yards out. Shaw made a great save to touch it over the crossbar.

"We had five non-starters out there just to rest us a little bit" commented Eagles Head Coach Mark Steffens. "We have so much depth, and everyone played great. We created a lot of scoring opportunities and didn't give them a lot."

The Eagles outshot the Chaos 17-4 tonight. Eagles goalkeeper Trevor Upton had two saves to earn the shutout in his first start this season. The win brings Charlotte's record to 10-2-1 for 31 points to lead the Pro Soccer League (PSL) Southern Division. Charlotte has two more games this week. On Wednesday, July 14th the Eagles head to Greensboro to face the Carolina Dynamo. The Eagles are back at home on Saturday, July 17th for a doubleheader evening with the Lady Eagles. The Lady Eagles kickoff at 5:30 pm hosting the Richmond Kickers Destiny, followed by the Eagles match at 8:00 pm against the Westchester Flames.
