Late Goal Carries City Islanders to 2-2 Draw

Penn FC News Release

Harrisburg, PA – Derek Potteiger's goal in second-half stoppage time lifted the Harrisburg City Islanders to a 2-2 tie against the South Jersey Barons at Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday night. With the tie, Harrisburg improves to 6-4-3 (21 points) on the season, while South Jersey (a Premier Development League side) remains undefeated at 12-0-4.

Potteiger's score salvaged a point for the Islanders, who battled hard and controlled play for lengthy stretches throughout the match, but were burned by two quick Barons strikes. In the 13th minute, Dorley Wilson slipped the ball to Ryan Heins in the penalty area on a 2-on-1, and Heins chipped Harrisburg keeper Dave Kern (four saves) for the game's first goal. And in the 88th minute, an errant Kyle Swords clearance landed on the foot of midfielder Tony Donatelli, who settled and rifled a lovely drive past Kern into the upper left corner of the net.

The Islanders answered Heins' score just 12 minutes later, when Moffat Oduor put Aleks Radovic through the defense with a ball down the slot, allowing Radovic to beat Barons keeper Pat Hannigan (5 saves) for a 1-1 deadlock in the 25th minute.

Harrisburg largely had the run of play in the second half before Donatelli's score put South Jersey in front. It might have been worse if not for two key stops from Kern, who stymied Moussa Issa from close range in the 64th minute and made a leaping fingertip save on Thomas Sauh in the 82nd minute.

With the Islanders pushing everyone forward as the clock ticked off stoppage time, Steve Fisher nodded down a high ball on the right side of the area, where Potteiger ran onto it. The team captain bulled his way through the South Jersey backline before trickling the tying score past Hannigan.

The clubs scuffled through two scoreless overtimes to produce the tie.

Notes: The teams combined for six yellow cards in the tense contest, five on Harrisburg...The Islanders return to action next Saturday, July 17, with a road game against the Long Island Rough Riders (7:30 p.m. kickoff).
