Training Camp Report - Day 1
June 1, 2014 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Montreal Alouettes News Release
Sherbrooke, June 1, 2014 - No less than 87 Montreal Alouettes players reported to training camp under a brilliant June sun on Sunday, as the team hit Coulter Field on the campus of Bishop's University to officially open the 2014 season.
Tom Higgins coached his first two practices as the Alouettes' skipper under the watchful eyes of 200-some fans all too happy to see their favorite team back at work.
Eager veterans
The newcomers on-hand hoping to make the team in 2014 quickly realized that a tough task lies ahead, witnessing eager veterans report to camp exactly where they left off last season.
The CFL's defensive player of the year in 2013, Chip Cox, snagged the camp's first interception early in the first practice when the number one offence was going toe-to-toe with its defensive counterparts. S.J. Green meanwhile, who led Alouettes receivers last year, continued making spectacular catches throughout the day, looking on pace to have another career year.
Guest coaches
The Alouettes can count on the helping hands of three guest coaches during camp this June.
Ross Cammalleri, the special teams coordinator for the College Andre-Grasset Phenix is back for a second year in a row giving a hand to Noel Thorpe and his defensive coaches.
D.J. McCarthy, receivers' coach at Bethune-Cookman and Greg Davis, assistant coach with the Northeast Mississipi Tigers meanwhile, are also helping the Alouettes coaching staff.
Rapid fire
Quarterback Tanner Marsh showed his speed and mobility as he made a few players miss on several occasions when he tucked the ball in and ran with it when he was unable to connect with his receivers... Yannick Thibault, head coach of the Polyvalente Montignac Beliers in Lac-Megantic, QC was in attendance with his two sons, getting the chance to catch up with the Alouettes players he had faced this spring during a friendly hockey game in his hometown... Players from the Sherbrooke Bulldogs were also on-hand and got to see their favourite players up-close and personal when they were introduced to the crowd during player presentations.
