Notes and Quotes from Nighthawk Training Camp Day 3
A RUNDOWN OF TODAY'S HAPPENINGS AT TRAINING CAMP
The Omaha Nighthawks participated in a two-hour walkthru practice Sunday afternoon at the Kroc Center in Omaha. Because Saturday's practices took a toll on the players in terms of the heat and injuries, Coach Jagodzinski put his team through a sharp but lighter practice on Sunday with no pads to help the team recover and to protect them from the hot and humid weather conditions.
PLAYS OF THE DAY
Although the Nighthawks didn't do much in terms of physical contact on Sunday, the Offense still worked against the Defense for a good number of snaps. Jeff Garcia again showed off his arm by connecting deep with tight end Christen Hopkins and later with Robert Ferguson. Ferguson, who spent nine seasons in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, has shown his ability to get open and make plays so far in training camp. Ahman Green showed good bursts of speed hitting holes, and tight end Ryan Neufeld stretched the defense and caught the eye of quarterback Anthony Morelli, who found Neufeld downfield. The defense, not allowed to dish out any hits, still made plays when possible. Anthony Dorsett and Ricardo Colclough communicated well and anticipated some reads, while defensive end Robert Henderson put himself in position to make plays a few times.
NOTE OF THE DAY
Five new players were signed and at practice on Sunday for the first time. The five were Rahim Alem (DE, LSU), Kurtis Gregory (OT, Missouri), Larry Beavers (WR, Wesley), Jeffrey Fitzgerald (DE, Kansas State) and Patrick Wells (CB, Ferris).
COACH JAGODZINSKI SAYS
"We reviewed practices one and two. We had a crisp practice today. The guys are really practicing and playing like professionals. This is a long process, so I can't say we are ready now, but we will be."
- Coach Jagodzinski on Sunday's practice
QUOTES OF THE DAY
"Today was the toughest day of camp I've had in my professional career. We were low on receivers and I got a lot of reps...seriously, the toughest. As a team, we are getting along well. There is a great combination of good veteran leadership and a mixture of young guys. Collectively we are ready to win. We aren't worrying about individual goals until then."
- WR Robert Ferguson on only having three healthy receivers on the field on Sunday
"Coach is taking care of our bodies. I don't mind the heat, I'm from Florida, it doesn't bother me. We have a lot of good guys here, a bunch I knew from previous teams and then some new guys. Definitely some good characters on the team."
- CB Ricardo Colclough on practicing in the heat
CAMP SCHEDULE
After Sunday's practice, the Nighthawks returned to their hotel to study film Sunday night. The Nighthawks will return to the Kroc Center bright and early Monday morning for their second of seven two-a-days. The first practice begins at 8:45 a.m.
WEATHER REPORT
Sun, sun and more sun. The Nighthawks practiced under a cloudless blue sky Sunday afternoon in 90+ degree temperatures. Coach Jagodzinski gave the players a break from pads, and the team took a five-minute water break midway through practice.
