The Tucson Toros lost to the Edmonton Capitals 11-9 Sunday night. The Toros battled but fell short in a gritty performance at the plate that produced 14 hits on the night.

The Capitals jumped on the board early with 3 runs in the first inning off of Toros righty Albie Lopez. An RBI single by 2B Matt Rogelstad was followed by an RBI double by catcher Mike Rose to give the Capitals a 3-0 lead.

The Toros struck back with 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning to cut the lead to 1 run. Edmonton answered with a run in the bottom of the 5th frame to double up Tucson and take a 4-2 lead. Tucson fought back to tie the game 4-4 by scoring 2 runs in the top of the 6th that included an RBI single by catcher Luis Apodoca.

The Toros would tack on two more unanswered runs in the top of the 7th inning to move in front 6-4. The Capitals came right back in the bottom frame with 6 runs, including a homerun and grand slam. Homerun champion Cliff Brumbaugh drilled a solo homerun on an 0-1 count and leftfielder Steve Brown cleared the bases later in the inning with a grand slam to pull ahead 10-6.

Tucson would not go away easily in the top of the 8th inning, however, closing the gap with 3 runs after an RBI single by catcher Luis Apodoca and a two run homer by centerfielder Josh Womack to trim the lead to one once again. Edmonton would pull away by adding a run in the bottom of the 8th inning to edge the Toros 11-9.

Each starting Toros position player had at least 1 hit, with 4 players enjoying a multi-hit night. Apodaca and 3B Wally Backman Jr. led the way with 3 hits apiece.

The Toros will play game three of the four game series against the Edmonton Capitals Monday night at 6:00 p.m. (Tucson time).
