Toronto's Watson named Player of Week
Published on March 26, 2008 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
Toronto's Bob Watson was named Defensive Player and Overall Player of the Week. The 37-year-old All-Star goaltender led the Rock to a pair of wins this weekend, holding Edmonton to nine goals in Friday's 14-9 win at Air Canada Centre, and Buffalo to seven goals in Saturday's 13-9 win at HSBC Arena. Watson recorded 81 saves in the two wins, playing all but 38 seconds in goal in the weekends' two games. It marks the third time this season that he was named Defensive Player of the Week for the third-place Rock (7-4).
Colorado's Brian Langtry was named Offensive Player of the Week. Langtry scored an NLL season-high nine goals (doubling his personal total for the season), one short of the league-record (10, achieved by Gary Gait and Paul Gait in 1999 and 1994, respectively). It also marks the most goals scored by an individual player in one game since John Grant matched the feat in Rochester's 22-18 win over New York on January 27, 2007. The Mammoth (6-4) lost to Portland, 15-14, on Thursday at the Rose Garden.
New York's Mitch Belisle was named Transition Player of the Week. The 22-year-old rookie defender scored two goals (the first of his career), and added one assist and nine loose balls in the Titans' 20-13 win over first-place Philadelphia on Saturday at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, NJ. The Titans (6-5) have won five of their last six games and trail Buffalo by only one-half game for the final playoff spot in the East.
San Jose's Sean Morris was named Rookie of the Week. The 25-year-old forward scored two goals and two assists in the first game of his NLL career. The Stealth (6-4) edged the San Jose Stealth, 13-12, at HP Pavilion on Saturday.
