Toronto FC Midfielder Amado Guevara Wins MLS Player of the Week Honors for Week 10

NEW YORK (May 25, 2009) - Toronto FC midfielder Amado Guevara was voted Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for Week 10 of the 2009 season. Guevara scored two goals to help Toronto FC down the New England Revolution 3-1 at BMO Field on Saturday, May 23. This also marks the first time in the history of the franchise that a Toronto FC player has won the weekly award.
Guevara and Toronto FC went into their showdown with the Revolution looking to put the home loss to Chicago the week prior behind them. They went down 1-0 to a Shalrie Joseph goal in the 13th minute and it looked like the prior week's loss had carried over, but it didn't take long for them to shake off the rust, as Guevara evened the score a minute later. Guevara connected with a right-footed blast from 20 yards out into the top right corner. The goal was set up by a combination from Chad Barrett and Danny Dichio. The goal was Guevara's fourth of the season.
Dwayne De Rosario gave Toronto FC the lead in the 67th minute on a long pass from Dichio, and Guevara put the finishing touches on the victory in the 70th minute. Guevara stepped up to take a free kick on the left wing 30 yards away from goal. He curled the free kick into the center of the penalty area, where Dichio rose to challenge for the ball. The ball passed narrowly over the head of Dichio, and continued on into the right corner of the goal past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis. The goal, Guevara's fifth of the season, put the game away and allowed Toronto to move to 4-3-4 with 16 points. They sit tied in points for second place in the Eastern Conference with D.C. United.
The MLS Player of the Week award is the fifth for Guevara and first since the 2006 season when he was a member of the New York Red Bulls. Guevara will lead Toronto FC in action when they travel to face the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, May 30 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
