Toronto Argonauts Mourn Loss of 5-Time Grey Champion Les Ascott

Toronto - The Toronto Argonauts Football Club is saddened to learn of the passing of one of its All-Time Argos. On Thursday evening, Leslie "Les" Ascott passed away peacefully in his sleep in his hometown of Peterborough, Ontario. He was 91 years old.
Ascott played for the Argos from 1940 to 1941, and then again from 1945 to 1953. Les took a break from football between 1941-1945 to serve in the Navy during the Second World War. A 5-time Grey Cup champion, Ascott was part of Argonauts teams that brought home three consecutive Grey Cups from 1945 to 1947. He then captured two more championships in Double Blue in 1950 and 1952.
In a special ceremony during the 2004 season, Ascott had his name raised to the rafters as he was added to the prestigious "All-Time Argos" list. He suited up for the club on the offensive line and is best remembered as wearing number 52.
He is survived by his wife Irene, his son, Terry, and his daughter, Barbara Blake.
Visitations are scheduled for Tuesday, August 13 at Nisbett Funeral Home in Peterborough (http://www.nisbettfuneralhome.com). A memorial service will be held there on Wednesday. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
