Texas Tornado News Release
Coming into last weekend, the Texas Tornado had played their division-rival Topeka Roadrunners just twice so far this season. The team traveled to Landon Arena for the first time for games on Friday and Saturday, and though Texas won on Friday, they were unable to complete the weekend sweep the following night. The Tornado remain two points ahead of the Roadrunners for second in the South Division while Amarillo is in first, 11 points in front of Texas.
Friday, January 20 - th- Tornado cash in on power-play in 2-1 victory
The Texas Tornado scored two power-play goals Friday night, the second of which proved to be the game-winner, in a 2-1 victory over the Topeka Roadrunners. Joakim Jutras improved his record to 16-5-3 after making 18 saves in the Texas win. After a scoreless first period, the Tornado converted on back-to-back power-plays in the middle frame. With the Tornado in the Topeka zone on an extended power-play shift, Jordan Greenberg passed the puck back out to the point for Nick Neville . Neville gave it across to Lucas Whelan who sent a one-timer through a screen and past Roadrunners goaltender Peter Traber and in for the opening goal of the game. Under three minutes later, Texas found itself up a man once again. A blast from the point was blocked by Topeka defenseman Chris Bond, but after blocking the shot, Bond dropped to the ice and was unable to get back to feet. This essentially created a two-man advantage for the Tornado, who doubled their lead when a wrist shot from Jack Prince beat Traber on the short side for the Tornado's second power-play goal of the period.
Saturday, January 21st- Texas clipped by Topeka after falling just short, 3-2
The Texas Tornado were unable to earn a road sweep against the Topeka Roadrunners this weekend, as Topeka salvaged a split of the two-game series with a 3-2 win on Saturday night at Landon Arena. Joakim Jutras started in goal for the second straight night and made 26 saves, but Topeka goaltender Peter Traber earned his 16 th win of the season. Mick Bruce scored for the Roadrunners just 48 seconds into the game, though C.J. Reuschlein scored mid-way the second to even the score. Back-to-back Topeka goals forced the Tornado to pull their goalie late in the third. The extra attacker led to a Jordan Lovick goal, but Texas was unable to get another goal to tie it.
Upcoming Games and Promotions
Tornado fans have the opportunity to catch the squad at Dr Pepper Arena in each of the next three weeks. The Tornado will be back in action at Dr Pepper Arena on Friday, January 27th for a game against the Fresno Monsters. Texas went on the road to play Fresno twice in mid-November and came away victorious in both games. They'll follow that up with three games against Wichita Falls the following weekend and another two on February 10th and 11th with Amarillo.
