Tornado off and Running in 2012-2013

October 5, 2012 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Texas Tornado News Release

Six games into the season, the defending Robertson Cup champions are looking good.

In the team's first true road game of the season, the Texas Tornado defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays by a score of 4-1 on Thursday night, giving them a 6-0-0 record to start the season. Brandon Hawkins scored a natural hat trick in the second period and has scored all six of his goals --which leads the team-- in the last three games. He is second on the team in points to Jackson Leef, who was recently named Tornado captain. Leef has two goals and seven assists on the young season and has looked strong in his final season of junior eligibility. After scoring the Robertson Cup-winning goal in overtime back in May, Plano native and assistant captain Justin Greenberg picked up where he left off, scoring a goal and seven assists at the Combat Hockey/NAHL Showcase and being named South Division Star of the Week on September 17th.

Defensively, Alex Temby and Michael Hoy (both assistant captains) have emerged as the top D-pair for the Gold and Black. Both players are returners from last year's Robertson Cup-winning team, though Temby was acquired mid-season from the Fairbanks Ice Dogs. Nick Neville is back patrolling the blue lines for the Tornado, as well, and has typically been paired up with either Ryan Tinsley or Mitchell Mueller. Meanwhile, rookie Anthony Mousseau leads all Tornado defensemen in scoring with a goal and six assists. He and his partner Nick Blase lead the team in +/-, as well, at a +8.

Garland's own Hunter Leisner is back in between the pipes for the Tornado, starting in five of the team's six games. He's posted a 1.97 GAA and a .928 SV% in his five wins, including a 37-save effort against Corpus Christi Thursday night. Leisner is being backed up by Finnish rookie Jerry Kaukinen, who was in net for the Tornado's 5-3 win over Janesville on September 14th.

The Tornado return to the ice at American Bank Center tonight for a 7:05 p.m. contest against Corpus Christi. Following the game, the team will return to Frisco and host the Wichita Falls Wildcats on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. Group packages start as low as $8 a ticket, while partial season ticket and flex packages can be purchased for just $80!
