Newark Bears News Release

Independent league baseball is back in Newark and it's better than ever! Join the Newark Bears as they celebrate their 95th anniversary, and the opening of the 2012 regular season on Thursday May 17th.

Join new owners, Danielle Dronet and Dr. Douglas Spiel, during their teams opening day at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium TONIGHT, Thursday, May 17th at 6pm for an explosive opening day ceremony that includes the ceremonial first pitch by Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo. Then get ready to root on the Bears, as Newark plays host to the Worcester Tornadoes and a very familiar face, Jose Canseco, who recently signed with the Worcester Tornadoes.

A coaching staff with decades of major league experience leads the Bears into a brand new era of baseball excellence. Ken "Obie" Oberkfell, formally the New York Mets bench coach and minor league manager of the Mets triple-A affiliates in New Orleans and Buffalo, takes over as the Bears new manager. Joining "Obie", former major league pitcher Ralph Citarella, who enters his first year as a pitching coach. Last but certainly not least, Newark's coaching staff rounds out with a common Bears face and very experience legend, coach Tim Raines.

This year's team will have a nice mix of major league talent and local sports icons. Former MLB stars include first baseman Daryle Ward, who played 11 years in the majors, most notably with the Cubs and Astros. Jorge Vasquez, played in the Atlanta Braves organization, and will assume the role as the Bears closer this season. Locally, keep an eye out for Newark's Burt Reynolds, the cousin of Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, who will be a starter in the outfield for the Bears.

The fun doesn't just stop with the baseball team! The Bears will host many new and exciting attractions, such as Locker Wars! Before the first pitch is thrown, fans are encouraged to join the Bears staff on the concourse to get a glimpse of lockers stuffed with goods. Bidding on the locker's contents will begin in the third inning and continue throughout the night.

Other great events like Diamond Dig, Bark in the Park, Kids Club Runs the Bases, Launch-A-Ball, guest appearances by members of WWE, and the off-Broadway performance of "Broadway Meets Baseball" highlight a season full of activities, among many more.
