The New York Titans National Lacrosse League franchise won the first game in its history Saturday night, defeating the Chicago Shamrox 11-9 in the first ever lacrosse game at Madison Square Garden. The victory for the Titans concluded a milestone week for New York City's newest professional sports franchise.

A crowd of 13,127 attended Saturday's game, marking the fourth-largest crowd for a home opener for a new NLL franchise in the 21-year history of the NLL

74 members of the media were credentialed for the game, representing seven countries, marking the most number of media to cover an NLL game in the history of the league. Media attendance was nearly 40 percent greater than the previous best mark of 54 attending media.

Media attention prior to the team's home opener - part of what the National Lacrosse League called "the best week of national US press coverage the league has ever had" - included television segments on The Today Show, CNBC and ESPNews. Titans captain Casey Powell, Titans assistant captain Ryan Boyle and team owners and officials opened the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, Jan. 18. Pre-event print coverage including stories and mentions in the New York Times, the New York Daily News, the New York Post, Newsday, Sports Illustrated and Agence France Presse. Highlights from the Titans-Shamrox game were shown on ESPN2's show "Cold Pizza" Monday morning.

Seen watching the game on Saturday evening were NBC Law and Order SVU star Tamara Tunie, who sang the national anthem prior to the game, Dina and Cody Lohan , mother and brother of actress Lindsay Lohan, Evan Ross, actor and son of singer Diana Ross and New York Stock Exchange Chairman John Thain.

The Titans will next play Friday evening, Jan. 26 against the Philadelphia Wings in the team's first game at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. The Titans urge fans to buy tickets early at Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com, and the Nassau Coliseum Box Office. The teams' next game at Madison Square Garden will be Saturday, Feb. 17 against the Minnesota Swarm.
