TinCaps Tie Franchise Record for Hits in Lopsided Win at Lansing

LANSING, Mich. -- In the 30th year of Fort Wayne's franchise, the TinCaps matched a club record for hits in a game as they annihilated the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland A's affiliate), 14-0, on Sunday afternoon at Jackson Field. The 'Caps recorded 22 hits, matching a record that was previously set in 1998.

With the victory, the TinCaps took four of six to win the series.

Fort Wayne (26-37) scored eight runs on eight hits and two walks in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Right fielder Agustín Ruiz delivered the biggest blow with a three-run homer that made it 5-0. The TinCaps chased Lugnuts starter Shohei Tomioka out of the game in the first.

Meanwhile, not to go unnoticed, 'Caps starter Robert Gasser threw seven no-hit innings. The 23-year-old left hander walked the first batter he faced and was perfect after that, retiring 21 consecutive batters. The No. 8 Padres prospect struck out eight. Remarkably, the TinCaps have no-hit their opponent through seven innings each of the past two Sunday afternoons, after also accomplishing that against Lake County last week.

Offensively, Fort Wayne poured it on with two runs in the third, one in the fifth, one in the seventh, and two more in the ninth. The Summit City squad was 11-for-23 (.478) with runners in scoring position. All nine batters in the order had at least one hit. Everyone reached base at least twice.

Lansing (24-39) finally recorded its first hit with one out in the eighth as Gabriel Maciel doubled against reliever Gabe Morales. The lefty allowed a walk and a single in the ninth, but preserved the shutout as he finished with four strikeouts.

Fort Wayne previously set the franchise record for hits in a game with 22 on April 29, 1998, also at Lansing

Largest margin of victory, and shutout, since a 15-0 home win over Lansing on June 10, 2018

Most runs in a game since scoring 15 on July 28, 2021 at Lansing

Tied season highs for doubles (6) and extra-base hits (8)

Ruiz went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a home run, becoming the 3rdTinCap this season to have a 4-hit game, and the 2nd to have 3 extra-base hits; he also became the 7thplayer this season to amass 4 RBIs

Robert Hassell III went 3-for-7 with a double and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest for a TinCap this season

For the year, Hassell leads the Midwest League with a .317 batting average

Gasser has thrown 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings over his last 3 starts

For the season, Gasser ranks 3rd in the MWL in strikeouts, 8th in WHIP,and 9th in ERA

4th shutout victory through 63 games

The TinCaps went 9-3 at Lansing this season, with six home games still remaining against the Lugnuts (July 12-17)

The only nine-inning no hitter in the team's history remains May 9, 2013 versus Great Lakes
