IFL Indoor Football League

Time Ticks Down For Playoff Hopefuls

June 1, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release

Richmond, VA: New pieces to the playoff puzzle were decided during Week Fourteen of the IFL season. Several teams found themselves on the outside of the playoff picture, while others locked down their shot of post season glory. Overall, there were ten tumultuous battles on the gridiron that played out in Week Fourteen. The week saw upsets made, records shattered, and celebrations earned as teams clinched playoff berths. The IFL Game of the Week saw an epic showdown between the Richmond Revolution defying odds against the Green Bay Blizzard.

Friday night will go down in IFL history as the Chicago Slaughter (6-5) broke the IFL scoring record against the West Michigan ThunderHawks (5-6). Chicago won by the score of 83-49 to set the highest points scored in a game. Chicago tallied 46 of their 83 points in the second quarter of the high scoring affair. This point total for a quarter broke a Slaughter team record. The offense of the game was basically controlled by the duo of Chicago QB Randy Hutchison and WR Reggie Grey. The tandem led the scoring by combining for five touchdowns. Grey proved to be a talented target for Hutchison as he also had eight catches for 123 yards. WR Shatone Powers proved to be another solid choice for Hutchison. Powers finished the day with five receptions for 63 yards and scored three TDs. This game marks the second straight victory for the Slaughter and the second straight week they have broken an IFL record. Last week, K Chris Nendick kicked the longest field goal in IFL history. The win also slots the Slaughter in the playoffs with a wildcard berth. Chicago will travel to Rochester for Week Fifteen action. The ThunderHawks will attempt to get back in the win column at Bloomington next week.

The Green Bay Blizzard (7-4) looked to end a three game slide in Richmond against the Revolution (11-1). The Blizzard were forced to sit their starting QB Jake Phillips who suffered a concussion last week against Chicago. Ryan McManus got the nod to be the Blizzard starting quarterback. McManus would go 8 for 19 on his passing attempts for 75 yards and one touchdown pass. This output would not match up with the Revolution's Bryan Randall. Randall threw for six touchdowns during the game and ran one in himself for a score as well. Randall completed 15 of his 29 attempts as he out dueled Green Bay for a 54-44 victory. The win clinches Richmond for a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Blizzard will return home in Week Fifteen to play the Wichita Wild. The Richmond Revolution will head to Maryland for an Atlantic East outing against the Maniacs.

Lonestar East action played out in Austin, Texas as the Arkansas Diamonds (9-3) played a close contest against the Austin Turfcats (2-9). Austin hoped to win another close game as they have been on the short end of these opportunities all season. However, the Diamonds would shine through in a 21-16 victory. Two top Intense Conference titans face off in Week Fifteen when Arkansas hosts Amarillo. The Turfcats will have another shot against a Lonestar East opponent when they play at San Angelo.

The Colorado Ice (2-9) were in search of their second straight win as they hosted Central West opponents, the Sioux City Bandits (4-7). As time dwindled down to under four minutes in the fourth quarter, Ice Quarterback David Knighton capped off a near three minute drive with a touchdown pass to receiver Lemans Casimier. Kicker Rocky Stevens would drill the extra point to put the Ice ahead of the Bandits 42-38. Knighton threw for 144 yards and connected with receivers four times for touchdowns. Casimier would be a popular red zone choice as he grabbed two of the four touchdown strikes thrown by Knighton. Colorado and Sioux City will continue Central West play in Week Fifteen. The Ice will host a resurging Sioux Falls Storm while the Bandits look to bounce back in Omaha against the Beef.

The Lonestar West had long been wrapped up by the Amarillo Venom. However, bragging rights would be on the line as Abilene wanted to send their fans home happy for the final Ruff Riders home game of the season. Being without top receivers Ivory McCann and Robert Gills would definitely burst the Ruff Riders (2-10) offensive bubble as they fell to the Venom (10-1) 56-22. Abilene knew it would have to play well on both sides of the ball, but could not contain an Amarillo offense that scores 51.6 points per game, good for fourth best in the IFL. The Venom defense however would deal the deadliest blows in the game. The Amarillo defense combined for seven sacks and forced two fumbles. Barrett Allen had three of the seven Venom sacks and also provided three tackles for a loss. Abilene will dust themselves off and head out on the road to finish their season with their next stop in Corpus Christi in Week Fifteen. Amarillo also sees Week Fifteen road action as the travel to Arkansas to play the Diamonds.

Pacific North competition heated up as the Tri-Cities Fever (5-6) hosted the Fairbanks Grizzlies (6-5). Fairbanks was coming off the momentum of a huge Week Thirteen victory over Billings, but could not translate the same success against the Fever. The Grizzlies could only produce three touchdowns for the entire game. Fairbanks also had four turnovers that proved to be costly. Three of the four were turned into 21 points for Tri-Cities, who captured the contest by a final of 50-21. The second half was the unraveling point for the Grizzlies. Quarterback Justin Rummell fumbled on two consecutive drives, the recoveries helped lead to Tri-Cities dominant performance. Fairbanks will hope their offensive hibernation ends soon as they play their final three games at home, including next week's match-up against La Crosse. Tri-Cities will travel to Pacific North rivals, the Kent Predators, as they try to continue to ride their hot streak.

Overtime action stirred up an exciting Central West showdown between the Sioux Falls Storm (9-2) and the Omaha Beef (6-5). As time slowly faded in the fourth quarter, the Storm orchestrated a four play, 40 yard game winning scoring drive with only six seconds of game time left. After the ensuing kick off, Beef kicker Shane Longest would send the game to OT on a 56-yard field goal. Longest would again make a pivotal game changing play. The kicker would miss the extra point on the Beef's opening score of overtime. This would open up Omaha for the 57-56 loss. The Storm surged for the score on their possession, needing only three plays to put the game away with a touchdown run and hitting their extra point attempt for the win. Both teams continue Central North action in Week Fifteen. The Beef will look to rebuild their hot streak as they go to Sioux City against the Bandits. The Sioux Falls Storm front will move onto Colorado in Week Fifteen to try and rain on the Ice's recent winning streak.

The stat sheets for the Corpus Christi Hammerheads (5-6) game in Odessa, TX against the Roughnecks (5-7) show both teams dead even on total offense at 235 total yards. The win column however, is reserved for West Texas who defeated the Hammerheads 50-38 in an Intense Conference meeting. The match-up lived up to any pre game hype. Both teams' quarterbacks threw for over 200 yards for five touchdowns, and were picked off twice. The difference maker came late in the fourth when Roughnecks LB Nathaniel Dunn intercepted Hammerheads QB Wesley Cooper. West Texas would be able to close out the game on a ten yard touchdown run from RB Jorvorskie Lane for the 50-38 victory. The Roughnecks have a week to enjoy the win as they will have a BYE week. Corpus Christi can continue their home winning record in Week Fifteen as they host Abilene.

Maryland (0-11) played Atlantic East rival Rochester (8-4) to try and achieve their elusive first victory late in the IFL season. The Raiders were coming off a tough loss to Richmond and this could have been a prime opportunity for the Maniacs. The end result continues to drive Maryland fans crazy as the Raiders were victorious, 36-9. While Maryland could only muster a touchdown, Raiders QB Perry Patterson led the charge for the Raiders. Patterson ran in two of the Rochester touchdowns and went 17 for 28 on his completions for 149 yards and two touchdowns. The schedule will not get easier for the Maniacs who get to host the Atlantic East champion Richmond Revolution in Week Fifteen. The Raiders will host the Chicago Slaughter in United Conference action.

The Billings Outlaws (10-2) won a close contest in Kent, Washington against the Predators (5-7) by a final of 53-47. The Outlaws were trying to avoid losing their second straight contest to a Pacific North opponent. Tim Brown made sure that would not happen. Brown tallied 81 yards on his 16 touches, as he scored twice on the ground and caught one touchdown pass to complete his high scoring day. The game winning play can be attributed to Fred Holmes. Holmes recovered an onside kick late in the game that clinched more than just a victory for Billings. With that victory, the Outlaws won the Pacific North Division and can continue celebrate into next week as they will have a BYE Week. Kent will continue divisional play as they host the Tri-Cities Fever.

Week Fourteen Vidswap.com IFL Players of the Week will be announced on Wednesday. The IFL season will continue with Week Fifteen on June 4th when the Tri-Cities Fever host the Kent Predators and the Amarillo Venom travel to Arkansas to play the Diamonds.
