PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers this week have continued their preseason training regimen at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, preparing for their first preseason matches next week. The Timbers are midway through Week 2 of their seven-week preseason schedule.
The Timbers are wrapping up their second week of training in Portland before heading to Southern California over the weekend for a 12-day camp in Carson, Calif., headquartered at The Home Depot Center. It is in California that the club will open its slate of preseason matches on Tuesday, Feb. 7, against the LA Galaxy.
In Week 2, the Timbers' preseason roster has seen the addition of trialist Sebastián Rincon, bringing the club's list of non-roster players in camp to eight. Scheduled to join the team in California is midfielder/defender Logan McDaniel, who was selected by Portland in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft from Loyola Marymount University. The Timbers return from California on Feb. 16, and will spend the remainder of the preseason in the Rose City. During the final stretch of preseason, the Timbers will play host to a preseason tournament at JELD-WEN Field, playing against MLS sides Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes as well as Swedish club AIK. Portland's 2012 MLS season opener is Monday, March 12, at JELD-WEN Field.
JELD-WEN Field, Turner Construction honored by Engineering-News Record
The Timbers' home venue, JELD-WEN Field, and Turner Construction, who oversaw the stadium's recent $40 million renovation project, were recently recognized by Engineering-News Record and named to the organization's list of the Best of the Best Projects for 2011. The project's architect, AECOM, and owner's representative, ICON, were also recognized.
JELD-WEN Field was listed as one of just 18 construction projects from around the United States completed in 2011 recognized for their excellence in design and construction. JELD-WEN Field earned the award for Best Sports/Entertainment project. Click here for the complete list of award-winners.
The 2011 ENR Best of the Best Projects is a national competition that recognizes design and construction excellence based on regional winners of ENR's seven regional publications' Best Projects 2011 Awards. Each winner was determined by a panel of industry experts from a pool of regional winners based on several criteria: safety, innovation, contribution to the industry/community, aesthetics, functionality, quality and craftsmanship.
Tickets for Timbers' preseason tournament go on sale Monday, Feb. 6
Tickets for the Timbers' preseason tournament at JELD-WEN Field go on sale to the public on Monday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. (Pacific) through the JELD-WEN Field box office, local Ticketmaster locations, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone (800) 745-3000.
The preseason tournament, which will be held Feb. 27 through March 4, will consist of three doubleheader sessions at JELD-WEN Field. The tournament will feature Chivas USA, San Jose and Swedish first-division club AIK in a round-robin competition.
Individual tickets for the tournament start at $10 per doubleheader session. Current Timbers season ticket holders will receive tickets for all three days (6 games total) of the tournament as part of their ticket package. The six games will count as Exhibition A in 2012 ticket packages.
Club announces additional change to 2012 TV schedule
The Timbers announced an additional change to their TV schedule for the upcoming season. The club's match on Saturday, Sept. 29, at JELD-WEN Field, against D.C. United will now air live on ROOT SPORTS; kickoff remains the same at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Club's preseason match schedule begins Feb. 7
The Timbers' 2012 slate of preseason fixtures begins Tuesday, Feb. 7, against the defending-MLS champion LA Galaxy. It will be the first of seven currently scheduled preseason games for the Timbers as they prepare for their second season in Major League Soccer.
Heading into their inaugural MLS campaign in 2011, the Timbers assembled an impressive preseason record (2-0-6), which included a 439-minute stretch without allowing a goal. In 2012, Portland faces a handful of the same opponents from its 2011 preseason, including the Galaxy, Houston Dynamo, San Jose Earthquakes and new MLS side, the Montreal Impact.

Timbers sign DP Kris Boyd, highlights busy week
On Monday, the Timbers announced a significant addition to the club's roster, signing Scottish forward Kris Boyd as a Designated Player. Boyd is the Scottish Premier League's (SPL) all-time leading scorer.
Boyd, 28, is one of the most prolific strikers in Scottish football, scoring 164 goals in 296 appearances in the Scottish Premier League with clubs Kilmarnock FC (2000-05) and Rangers FC (2006-10). He netted 101 goals during his time with Rangers and is a four-time winner of the SPL's goal-scoring title. Boyd has been capped 18 times by the Scotland National Team. Since 2000, Boyd has scored 176 goals in 335 career matches, playing in the top leagues of Scotland, England and Turkey. He will be added to the club's roster pending the receipt of his P-1 Visa and the successful completion of a physical.
On Tuesday, the Timbers acquired midfielder and U.S. youth international standout Charles Renken. Renken, 18, played last season with the U-19 side of German Bundesliga club TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. He's been a member of U.S. youth national teams since 2005 and was recently called in to camp with the U-23s in November 2011.
Timber Joey, Timbers Alumni Ambassadors join Friends of Trees for tree planting Feb. 11
The Timbers and Friends of Trees will join forces to plant trees around the Portland-metro area on Saturday, Feb. 11. Mascot Timber Joey and Alumni Ambassadors Scot Thompson and Mick Hoban will represent the club at the tree-planting event; click here for details and learn how fans can join in.
Friends of Trees is one of the Timbers' three community pillar partners and strives to bring people in the Portland-Vancouver metro areas together to plant and care for city trees and green spaces. Along with JELD-WEN Windows & Doors, the Timbers and Friends of Trees have partnered for the "Score a Goal, Plant a Tree" program, seeing that a tree is planted for every goal scored by a Timbers player throughout the season.
NASL Timber Glenn Myernick on National Soccer Hall of Fame ballot
Ballots have been finalized and nominees for the National Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2012 have been announced. Included among the 10 key figures for the 2012 National Soccer Hall of Fame Veteran Ballot is former NASL Timbers defender Glenn Myernick.
The Veteran Ballot is voted on only by current members of the National Soccer Hall of Fame; voting will end Feb. 17 and the inductees from the various categories will be announced then. Click here for ballot criteria and the complete list of nominees for the 2012 class.
Myernick was a member of the Timbers for three seasons from 1980-82, playing in a total of 60 games and recording 11 assists in the original North American Soccer League.

Authentic third kits remain available as part of limited-edition gift sets that include an authentic third jersey and a unique Timbers scarf, which is made of 100 percent recycled cotton. The set also includes a collectible gift box featuring a photo collage of historic Timbers images.
The adidas Timbers Team Store is located at JELD-WEN Field and is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Timbers' weekly radio talk show, "Talk Timbers," presented by JELD-WEN Windows & Doors, airs each week on 750 AM The Game. Hosted by John Strong, Talk Timbers will feature interviews with club officials, coaches, players and special guests. The show will provide team news and the latest information from around MLS as the 2012 season approaches.
The next four Talk Timbers shows are: Friday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m.
